Scholastic artists
In the year 2020 when nothing was certain, there was still one item art teachers were determined to assure would be able to showcase the talent and hard work of their students.
This year's Scholastics Art and Writing Competition was able to be pulled off in more of the most unforgettable and forgettable years we have ever seen. Over 40 teachers from Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, and Ashtabula counties entered over 300 works from students in drawing, painting, photography, digital art, and more to be judged at the regional level to see who would represent our area and compete at the national level this coming spring.
United High School received two Silver Keys by Shyanna Coleman and Victoria Solomon (educator Heather Connor).
Also receiving recognition were Grant Menough, Makenna While, and Zac Watkins of Salem. Grant received four Silver keys (one being on his portfolio) with Makenna and Zac each receiving one. Grant also received a Gold Key in the show for his oil painting titled Tyler. Grant's Gold Key piece will now move onto New York and compete at the national level this coming spring.
Winners at the national level will be announced on March 17.
Slippery Rock honors
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.-- Slippery Rock University has announced its dean's list for the fall 2020 semester. The dean's list consists of SRU undergraduate students who earned an adjusted semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, based on a schedule of at least 12 newly attempted and earned credits. Local students include:
Lydia Baird of Salem, Breanne Dallies of New Waterford, Avery Oates of East Palestine and Megan Hutchman, Jenna Sanfilippo and Rebecca Wright of East Liverpool.

Ohio Wesleyan honors
DELAWARE -- Jillian O'Hara and Mackenzie Wade of East Liverpool were named to the dean's list at Ohio Wesleyan University. To qualify for dean's list recognition, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Eastern Gateway
COLUMBUS - Eastern Gateway Community College has earned the Ohio Treasurer's Compass Award for January.
Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague announced honorees for the month Friday. The monthly recognition program commends organizations, programs, and individuals across the state who are working to guide Ohioans toward financial literacy and empowerment.
A fast-growing educational center, Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) offers a no-cost education to qualifying local students. Through their Career Development Center, EGCC works to equip students with the tools needed to make informed decisions about their degree and career options, as well as education on topics such as creating a resume and interviewing for a job.
Additionally, EGCC focuses on building relationships with employers at the local, regional, and national levels to expose students to a wide variety of career and professional pathways.
"With Ohio's economy and workforce rapidly changing to meet the demands of the future, the importance of financial literacy education for our state's young people cannot be understated," said Sprague. "The Compass Award program recognizes the people and organizations creating comprehensive and innovative methods for equipping the next generation with the personal finance skills that will put them on the path to success."
