LISBON -- Jack O. Colon, the Leetonia-area man who attempted to file treason charges against Gov. Mike DeWine in Common Pleas Court last week, was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation by county Municipal Court Judge Katelyn Dickey on Thursday.

Colon, 60, Longs Crossing Road, Leetonia, is charged with an aggravated menacing charge, a first-degree misdemeanor. He appeared in custody by video from the county jail.

Assistant County Prosecutor Abbey Minamyer first asked Dickey to consider adding a condition to Colon's bond that he have no contact with any of the schools in the county. One of the threats Colon reportedly made dealt with the schools harming children by making students wear masks.

The schools were added to the places where Colon cannot go, which includes the clerk of court's office.

Colon is currently in jail on a $15,000 cash or surety bond and Dickey denied Colon's request to have the amount of bond reduced. Colon argued during the hearing that he did not agree to be represented by his appointed defense attorney, Stacey Alejars, and he would represent himself.

He then said he needed his bond reduced so he could get to a law library to research his defense and so he could go back to work so he would not lose his home.

After Dickey denied his request to lower his bond, Colon asked if he could still mail things to the clerks office so it could be filed if his bond condition indicates he can have no contact with them.

Dickey said he was permitted to mail things there, but she would not guarantee they would be filed.

She told him to expect a visit from someone at the Forensic Center, who will evaluate him.

Colon was charged after he appeared at Common Pleas Court on Jan. 21 and reportedly became upset when the clerks would not allow him to file a complaint charging DeWine with treason and threatening he should be hung. According to police, he further threatened those working in the clerks office for refusing to help him file the paperwork and began naming local schools he would be visiting in order to take things into his own hands.

At least one threatening email from Colon was received by the Leetonia High School principal and reported to Leetonia police.
