Competency exam due alleged Salem shoplifter

2 min read

LISBON -- A Salem woman is facing a competency evaluation and an additional theft charge for an alleged shoplifting spree in Salem Monday.

Diana Andre, 40, of Newgarden Avenue, was arraigned Thursday in county Municipal Court on the misdemeanor charge alleging she stole merchandise from True Value Hardware in Salem.

A request for a competency to stand trial exam was ordered to be completed at the Forensic Psychiatric Center of Northeast Ohio.

Andre was taken into custody by Salem police after officers caught her with a stolen pink backpack loaded with other stolen items after thefts from several Salem stores Monday evening. Her bond had been set at $2,500 cash or surety and she remained in jail.

The other charges against her include three counts of theft and one count of resisting arrest after she pulled away from officers trying to handcuff her. She was arraigned on those charges Tuesday.

She was to have no contact with Rite Aid, Shoe Sensation or Walmart, three of the Salem stores where thefts took place Monday. True Value was added to that list.

Police had initially been called to Shoe Sensation at 7 p.m. Monday for a known woman walking around for a few minutes and then walked out without paying for anything. She was stopped in the parking lot and returned some of the items to the store employee before leaving.

Police were able to locate her based on the employee's description and several other reports from stores who claimed the same female stole from them.

The report from True Value at the Salem Plaza described a female wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers jacket and pink backpack who allegedly took items and left on foot. She was found at Rite Aid with allegedly stolen merchandise and it was discovered she had committed a theft at Rite Aid and had items stolen from Walmart in her possession, too, including the pink backpack which still had the Walmart tag attached to it.
