Athletic trainers hired by United Local board

HANOVERTON -- The United Local school board Wednesday night hired medical personnel to attend winter sport events.

The board hired Mollie Phillis, Megan Weyant and Susan Laughlin as athletic trainers for wrestling and boys and girls basketball at $20 per hour. Superintendent Lance Hostetler originally suggested capping the amount for athletic training at $2,500 for the season, but the board chose to leave the total indefinite based on how many events will require a trainer.

Hostetler said the district had no medical worker at the wrestling events last year and a student athlete suffered an injury that needed attention. He noted it will not always possible to have one of the trainers at the events.

In other business, the board approved the new minimum wage salary increases established by the state as follows: $8.80 for minimum wage, $8.80 for substitute cooks, $8.95 for substitute secretaries, $9.20 for substitute custodians, $15 for substitute bus drivers and $11 for field trip sub drivers.

Hostetler said the bus drivers are included in the increases because the district is having trouble getting them.

The board also accepted the resignation of Justin Mitchell as junior high wrestling coach, who Hostetler said works in an industry with a high virus spread and did not want to put anyone in danger; hired Becky Kiko as a winter athletic department worker for various assignments in the district; granted supplemental contracts for the 2020-2021 school year to Kandace Cleland as spring musical director, Jodine Pilmer for assistant music director, Eric Simmons for ninth grade boys basketball and Jessica Ruggles for seventh and eighth grade winter cheer; and approved as volunteer coaches for 2020-2021 Danielle Burch, Joe Karmazin and Megan Gozelanczyk for indoor boys/girls track and Tom Coffee for varsity boys basketball.

Additionally the board granted supplemental coaching contracts for the 2021-2022 school year to David Ogilvie for head varsity football, Todd Sarchet for varsity golf, Curtis Jones for varsity boys soccer, Sarah Hodgson for varsity girls soccer, Joseph Karmazin for varsity cross country and Sarah Jones for varsity fall cheerleading.

The board also accepted donations from various community members of $830 for the Community Outreach program and $300 for the football program, as well as $2,000 from West Township (COVID Grant) to Ruriteens. The board also approved $300 from various community members to the Backpack program and $170 from Donors Choose awarded and donated to Kelly DeVille and her fifth-grade classroom to be used for a Nearpod license.
