SL goes remote, halting sports

SALINEVILLE — Southern Local Board of Education voted to send students home for remote learning starting on Monday, Nov. 23 and continuing until Jan. 19.

Starting Monday all athletic events and school activities will be postponed.

Board President Kip Dowling said the board will meet on Dec. 8 and revisit the situation at that time. Athletic Director Bob Shansky was asked to start rescheduling sports events, which he indicated will be difficult to do.

Following the meeting which included an executive session to discuss the decision with school administrators, Dowling said the board felt this was in the best interest of students. He noted families will be getting together over the holidays and the board wanted to take a proactive stance to stopping the recent increases of COVID-19. He added there are a lot of concerns for students and their families, especially where many students are raised by grandparents or older relatives.

“We want to stress our athletics are not canceled, they are only postponed,” Dowling said. “We are going to do everything we can to make all of those games up that we missed.”

Dowling also expressed how grateful the board is for all the hard work of the staff, the school nurse, the custodians and the food service employees keeping the students safe and schools clean since school began. Meal delivery services will continue for the students.
