County mom, infant killed in accident
DAYTON — Two people from Columbiana County, a woman and her baby, were killed last weekend in a traffic accident on an interstate near Dayton.
WFMJ Channel 21 identified the victims as 25-year-old Tonya Beachy and her 7-month-old daughter Ellie.
According to WFMJ, Erik Beachy and his family were enroute to an out-of-state wedding when the accident occurred Thursday evening on Interstate 70.
According to the Preble County post of the highway patrol, Beachy slowed for traffic near a construction site when his pickup truck was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer that failed to slow. The semi forced the pickup into the back of another tractor-trailer that was in front of Beachy, the patrol said.
Tonya Beachy died at the scene. The infant died at Dayton Children’s Hospital.
WFMJ said that according to a GoFundme post set up for funeral expenses, the crash occurred shortly after the family had pulled over at a rest stop to have a picnic. The family was on its way to a wedding in Kansas where Erik Beachy was to be the best man.
Dorcella Washington, 60, of Columbus, the driver of the first rig, was cited for failure to maintain an assured clear distance.
Washington and Erik Beachy were hospitalized with injuries the patrol said were non-life-threatening.
The patrol investigation will continue and further charges may be pending.
