Snowflake plaudits handed out in Palestine

EAST PALESTINE– After the success of the Snowflake Festival on Saturday, village council addressed everyone involved to make the event possible.

“I want to echo what everyone has been saying about the Snowflake Festival,” Acting Mayor Alan Cohen said. “It was really a fantastic day and a fantastic event. You saw East Palestine’s true colors across the town, and it would be nice to keep that spirit moving forward.”

Village Manager Mark McTrustry also thanked everyone involved with the festival. He added that it was a huge success, and the village has been speaking very highly of it.

In other business, Council looked over the broad strategic plan for the East Palestine City dam and city lake project and plans on giving McTrustry feedback on the plan.

“The dam is deteriorating to the point where it will ultimately need to be replaced,” Cohen said. “We’re in the process now to try to find funding for that, and we are having our engineering consultants do some studies on what is required.”

According to Cohen, the project would likely mean draining the lake for a period of time. He said it is a good opportunity to develop areas around the lake.

“We’ve already got the walking trail out there, but it would be nice to develop more recreational opportunities,” Cohen said. “Any input from the community in regards to this will certainly be welcomed.”

Council also approved:

— Patty Bosley to the Zoning Board of Appeals

— Wendy Tyger to the Library Board

— Jill McGee to the Library Board

— Stephanie Elick to the Library Board

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 23 following a development meeting at 6 p.m.
