Morning Journal/Deanne Johnson Work has already begun repairing a West Main Street, Salineville, home after a vehicle struck it Sunday night.

SALINEVILLE -- A Carrollton man who went airborne and struck a Salineville home Sunday night was cited after he was suspected to be under the influence of narcotics at the time of the crash.

Rodney Keith Sawman, 49, was found by Salineville police walking around his truck confused after an accident where his pickup struck a home and continued into another home's backyard.

Salineville Patrolman Connor Bailey asked for assistance in the investigation by the Highway Patrol and Trooper Steven Tucci responded to the scene. Sawman reportedly offered that he had only drank the half of a beer that was in his cupholder of his pickup truck. When a breath test was given, Sawman reportedly did not test with any blood alcohol level.

He also offered that he has been taking prescription pain medication after stopping cancer treatments recently. He was found under the influence of pills and cited with OVI before being released to his daughter, who did provide prescription bottles to authorities for his medicines.

Tucci and Bailey interviewed the owner of the West Main Street home, Donald Beadnell, who said Sawman come crashing through the corner of his home and seemed to keep driving. The truck continued through a fence and a row of trees that separated the property of Beadnell from his neighbor, Howard Bott.

Bott told authorities he did not see the impact, but heard it and then saw the truck sitting in his backyard.

According to police reports following the investigation, Sawman was eastbound on West Main Street and accelerated hard when he approached a shallow bend at the intersection of West Main Street and Line Alley. Instead of following the bend in the road, Sawman is believed to have gone airborne, through the fence and the corner of Beadnell's house. The truck continued through another fence, a row of trees and came to rest in the neighboring backyard.

During Monday's Salineville Council meeting, Mayor Linda Adams said people have told her they were very appreciative of the efforts of both the police and fire department, who both responded to the scene. Police Chief Matt Devlin added he was just glad no one was injured. Councilman Jim Wilson said the house looked more like there was an explosion.
