Salem Twp. picks three roads for chip-seal

FRANKLIN SQUARE — The 2017 chip and seal program for Salem Township will include three roads with a total of 5.2 miles.

Miller Road will receive the most work with 1.8 miles chip and sealed from state Route 164 to the bridge and .8 miles from state Route 11 to state Route 164.

Grafton Road from Lodge Road to Miller Road will see 1.8 miles chip and sealed. All those roads will receive a double sealing.

Also, one mile of Lodge Road to state Route 164 will be worked on, but will not be doubled sealed.

In other business, Trustee John Wilms asked the other trustees if they wanted to get the ball field cleaned up and in shape so kids can play on it.

“When it dries up,” Wilms said noting the fields dried quickly and trustees Bill Heston and Ray Heddleson agreed to have the street department crew work on the field for a couple of days.

Wilms said, “A general cleanup from gate to gate” and road foreman Jason Entrikin said he would also like to do some work on the dugouts.

In his report, Entrikin said he was working on culverts, one on Lisbon Road and another on St. Jacob-Logtown Road.

Also, Constable Dan Valentine in his report said things were “not so quiet” as he was receiving complaints about speeding.

“We run into this every year,” he said adding reports about thefts from autos have also picked up again.

He said reports were increasing for thefts from autos in southern Mahoning County and have moved down into the township. He noted purses and weapons have been stolen.

He has also received a number of animal complaints regarding dogs and horses on the loose.

Valentine also provided an update on the police cruiser explaining he had a tire with uneven wear that picked up a stone causing it to go flat and found a $25 tire to replace it.

The tire wore out on the inside and Valentine was unsure if was the result of a bad wheel bearing. He said that when the vehicle was repaired after the deer accident he had it was aligned.

He said he would keep an eye on the tire and submitted a list totaling $612 for everything that needs to be done on the cruiser. Trustees approved it unanimously.

Trustees also approved purchase orders for $500 for Lacal Co. for ditcher teeth, $300 for hydraulic fluid and $1,500 for gravel.
