Two Wellsville homes destroyed by fire

WELLSVILLE – Officials are trying to determine the cause of a massive fire that destroyed two homes and affected two others in the village early Monday morning.

According to Interim Fire Chief Barry Podwel, crews were called at 1:51 a.m. for a fire that originated at 507 Aten Ave., which had also spread to 1737 Maple Ave., located just behind the Aten Avenue home.

Podwel said the fire started at the rear of 507 Aten-owned by Joseph Hall of Toronto and occupied by Cindy Rawson-which became fully engulfed by the time crews arrived just before 2 a.m. The fire had also spread to the rear of the Maple Avenue home, which was owned and occupied by Jane Valentine.

No injuries were reported to either the residents or fire crews, but both homes were considered losses.

A team of 30 firefighters were at the scene for over four hours as they worked to put out the blaze. Among those were eight from Wellsville, 12 from the Highlandtown Volunteer Fire Department and 10 Liverpool Township firefighters. An additional three from Wellsville were on standby at the station.

Podwel said crews returned to the station by 6:18 a.m., while other personnel remained on the scene until about 11:30 a.m.

Two other neighboring homes also suffered damage from the fire. The house at 501 Aten Ave.-owned and occupied by Brian Kessel-suffered broken windows, melted siding on one side of the home and burn damage to a shed. The home at 509 Aten Ave.-owned and occupied by Lorraine Davis-had broken windows due to the heat of the fire, which also caused a panel of the vinyl fence to melt.

Rawson did not have renter’s insurance and, as a result, lost all of her possessions in the fire. He added that Rawson and Valentine are currently staying with their respective relatives in the area for the time being.

The State Fire Marshal’s office arrived in the village around 11:30 a.m. after it was called in to help determine the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.

An exact dollar amount of damage has also not been determined at this time.
