Wellsville-area man sentenced for robbery
LISBON – Robert Tucker, 64, Campground Road, Wellsville, was sentenced in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court to a year in prison on Monday for robbery.
Tucker’s defense attorney, Lynsey Lyle-Opalenik, explained her client does not even remember the events of the robbery due to his serious alcohol problem. She also pointed out there was no weapon involved in the robbery.
Tucker was charged with the robbery after he pushed Ian Urich, an asset protection officer who attempted to stop him from shoplifting at the Calcutta Walmart in March 2014. Tucker then ran across the parking lot toward J.C. Penney and was heading over the hill toward McGuffey Drive when police arrived. One patrolman chased him down on foot while another headed toward McCoy Avenue to cut Tucker off. He was found carrying a Walmart bag filled with miscellaneous items.
He pleaded guilty in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court in January.
“I want to apologize to Mr. Urich,” Tucker said prior to sentencing. “I am really sorry for shoving that young gentleman. I am not a thief. I work. I have money in the bank.”
Tucker continued that after waking up and learning he had been charged with robbery he knew he had a drinking problem. Now he is going to counseling to get help.
“I’m not going to let alcohol control my life anymore,” Tucker said.
Judge C. Ashley Pike said he was glad Tucker has taken the first step and admitted he has a problem with alcohol. However, he also noted sometimes when people drink they pose a threat to the rest of the community.
