EAST LIVERPOOL – The city fire department took receipt this week of four like-new computers, donated by Quaker Digital Academy (QDA) to replace outdated computer equipment.
Assistant Chief David Edgell said he had spoken to his brother, Jeff Edgell – a teacher at QDA – about what the cyber school does with its used computers. His brother, in turn, spoke with his boss, Casey Havens, who then broached the subject with Dr. Richard Varrati, CEO and executive director at QDA.
“Dr. Varrati said he would be happy to donate computers to us,” Edgell said, saying he was nonetheless pleasantly surprised when Varrati himself came from the school’s headquarters in New Philadelphia, bringing with him four computers.
“They were very generous and gave us much more than we were expecting. He even said they would send a technician to help set them up if we needed it,” Edgell said.
The completely refurbished computers will be used for a variety of purposes, including compiling the department’s daily logs and reports, calling third alarms to bring additional firefighters to emergencies and scheduling Toys for Tots events.
“(Varrati) was very happy to see we were using them for something related to children due to QDA being a school-based organization,” Edgell said, referring to the Toys for Tots usage.
The computers will replace existing equipment which is between 15 and 20 years old, and Edgell said QDA provided everything needed to put them immediately into use.
