Hanoverton gearing up for Peddler Days
HANOVERTON – The village will host its annual festival this week, attracting visitors with artisan vendors, food, entertainment and its firemen’s parade.
Hanoverton Peddler Days kicks off with a ghost walk through Historical Hanoverton starting on Plymouth Street at 8 p.m. Friday.
Peddler Days opens at 9 a.m. Saturday along Plymouth Street with a Civil War re-enactment from 1 to 1:30 p.m., firemen’s parade from 2 to 3 p.m. and free hot dogs, chips and soda with entertainment by DJ Jay from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Christian Church.
Sunday’s events include a church service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Gazebo, dulcimer music from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., country music by Dave Holland from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Civil War re-enactment from 1 to 1:30 p.m. and a 50/50 raffle drawing at 4 p.m.
All events are being held along Plymouth Street unless otherwise noted.
In addition to vendors offering a variety of artisan and name brand items, Peddler Days will feature a quilt/comforter display at the curio shop with a giveaway of two $50 gift certificates and free quilt book for all entrants plus a demonstration by local quilter Cleo Young of Carrollton; a vintage rope-making display; a tractor/small engine display remembering local historian Walt Watson at McKarns Field; and a car show/display and hot dog fest courtesy of the Peddler Day Committee Saturday evening.

Plaques will be awarded in the following categories: heavy pumper (1250 GPM and over), common pumper (750 and 1,000 GPM), mini pumper (under 750 GPM), tanker (any size), four wheel drive brush truck or brush fire ATV unit, oldest fire truck still in service, longest distance traveled for fire unit, emergency medical unit, marching unit, best horse unit, best appearing tractor, best appearing antique car or truck, best appearing float, judges choice, children’s unit, most original and rescue unit. The winners list and plaques will be available at the ladies auxiliary dumpling tent.
Over 15 years old, the annual event features local artisans and vendors while highlighting the historical aspect of the village, according to committee member Megan Miller Murphy.
“There are great local people that come out and sell everything from handmade (items) to [name brand items],” Murphy said. “And there’s certainly a historical element to it. It’s just a great time for people to see our community, see what we have to offer.”
The 2014 Peddler Days Committee includes Murphy, Lenore Sechler, Francis and Chuck Thompson, Dawn Renner, Robin Stewart, Linda Bedneal, Joyce Carnes, Joe McKarns, Judy Blessing, Dave Bernett, Jane Blazer, Marge Frost, Herrold Loutzenheiser and Jay Becker.
