LISBON -- A Salineville man recently sentenced to 44 months in prison filed an appeal recently in the Seventh District Court of Appeals to challenge the consecutive sentences.
Scott M. Haines, 52, state Route 164, who fled from deputies after threatening another man in the Spring Valley Road area in 2020, was sentenced to consecutive sentences of 36 months for fleeing and making threats and eight months for nonsupport of dependents from 2020 to 2022, for a total of 44 months in prison.
His trial defense attorney, Joe King, filed the appeals on his behalf, but requested appellate counsel be appointed
A jury recently found Haines innocent or not guilty of first-degree felony felonious assault related to running over a deputy's foot during the July 19, 2020 incident near Salineville.
Jurors, however, found him guilty of third-degree felony failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and misdemeanor aggravated menacing for fleeing from deputies and threatening the other man. A fourth count for criminal damaging had already been dismissed by the prosecution.
Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam sentenced him to 36 months for the failure to comply and 90 days for the aggravated menacing, to be served at the same time.
He also entered a guilty plea to three counts of nonsupport of dependents, a fifth-degree felony, and was sentenced to eight months in prison, consecutive to the other case, making the total prison term 44 months or three years eight months.
Prior to fleeing from deputies during the 2020 incident, Haines had been at a property on Spring Valley Road where he threatened to beat the other man and "smash his skull in" and had allegedly broken pool steps and thrown a thermometer and glass table.
The nonsupport of dependents case stemmed from failing to pay support for three different people from July 19, 2020 to July 17, 2022.
Also in Common Pleas Court:
-- Ricardo Gonzalez, 36, Canton, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree felonies of aggravated possession of drugs and possession of a fentanyl-related compound, with sentencing set Sept. 25 for possessing methamphetamine and fentanyl on April 17.
-- Robert Lee Vandyke, 32, Avondale Street, East Liverpool, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated possession of drugs, one a third-degree felony and one a fifth-degree felony, with sentencing set Nov. 19. A charge of aggravated trafficking in drugs will be dismissed. Vandyke possessed methamphetamine on Aug. 20, 2025 and Sept. 19, 2025.
