LISBON — An East Liverpool man accused of assaults in two separate cases was found sane at the time of the offenses and competent to stand trial, with a trial date of April 30 set in both cases.

William L. Gist, 56, St. Clair Avenue, East Liverpool, had been ordered evaluated by the Forensic Psychiatric Center of Northeast Ohio for competency to stand trial and plead not guilty by reason of insanity at the request of his defense counsel.

A status hearing was set for April 12.

In one case, Gist was indicted for fifth-degree felony assault for allegedly attempting to cause a harm to a female jail employee by throwing two dinner trays at her on May 1, 2023 while he was an inmate at the Columbiana County jail. In the other case, he was indicted for felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony, for allegedly causing harm to a woman on Jan. 7, 2023 with a previous charge of violence on his record for an aggravated burglary from 1999.

Also in Common Pleas Court:

— Tim Rinestine, 53, Overlook Drive, Salem, pleaded guilty to a lesser-included offense of fourth-degree felony attempted tampering with evidence (originally third-degree felony tampering with evidence) and misdemeanor illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, with sentencing set for May 10. Rinestine was accused of tossing a glass pipe off of the back deck of his residence when police responded for a female with a warrant on April 29, 2023 in Perry Township.

— Matthew Rudder, 34, Birch Road, East Liverpool, pleaded guilty to possession of fentanyl-related compound, a fifth-degree felony, with sentencing set for May 10. Rudder possessed fentanyl on April 2, 2022.
