LISBON -- A man accused of headbutting one deputy and injuring another while being taken into custody after a reported Salineville disturbance was sentenced to prison for 24 months for multiple charges.
Austin Maxon, 27, Water Street, Salineville, appeared in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court for sentencing on a lesser offense of burglary, a third-degree felony (originally a second-degree felony), fourth-degree felony assault, fifth-degree felony obstructing official business and misdemeanors of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He received credit for 109 days served in jail.
Maxon was accused of headbutting a deputy trying to take him into custody after a reported disturbance June 9 on Water Street in Salineville while he was allegedly under the influence. He also scratched up and bruised the arm of another deputy while resisting arrest. When taken into custody, Maxon allegedly possessed a BB gun that was later reported stolen by a Salineville resident who said someone had entered his home and taken the gun.
Also in Common Pleas Court:
-- Donovan Crytzer, 22, West Fourth Street, East Liverpool, was placed on probation for four years and ordered to have no contact with the victims for fourth-degree felony strangulation and misdemeanors of domestic violence and endangering children for physically strangling a woman by placing his hand around her neck until she could not breathe on July 9 in East Liverpool, all while a child was nearby screaming and crying during the assault.
-- Paul Beaver Jr., 34, whose address was listed as the county jail, was ordered to jail for 21 days after violating his probation, which was dishonorably terminated, for a case involving possession of fentanyl-related compound, a fifth-degree felony. Beaver possessed fentanyl on Jan. 25, 2021.
-- Patrick Trimble, 53, Youngstown, was placed on probation for two years after pleading guilty to nonsupport of dependents, a fifth-degree felony. He was ordered to make his child support payments as scheduled. He was accused of failing to pay child support for one child from April 1, 2019 to March 6, 2020.
-- Carol Jackson, 58, West Park Avenue, Columbiana, was ordered to serve up to six months at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center in Lisbon after violating the terms of her probation for aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, for possessing methamphetamine on Sept. 23, 2022. Her probation will be continued until Nov. 2, 2025.
-- Eric Smith, 36, Laneve Lane, Wellsville, was ordered to serve up to six months at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center in Wintersville after violating his treatment plan for possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, for possessing buprenorphine on March 31, 2021.
-- Charles Ripley, 42, St. Clair Avenue, East Liverpool, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony domestic violence and misdemeanor aggravated menacing, with sentencing set for Jan. 5. The charges stemmed from an incident at an apartment in East Liverpool on April 29 when Ripley allegedly caused harm to a woman and broke items, with two or more previous convictions of domestic violence on his record. During booking, he allegedly threatened to assault a police officer.
-- Nickolas Good, 33, New Springfield, was ordered to serve a term at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center until the program is complete after his probation was revoked for violating his treatment plan for aggravated possession of drugs, a fourth-degree felony. Good possessed methamphetamine on Oct. 28, 2021.
-- Charles Hoschar, 44, Alliance, was sentenced to 11 days in the county jail, with credit for 11 days served, after pleading no contest and being found guilty of attempted theft for an incident Aug. 16, 2021.
-- Kendall Morgan, 55, Waynesburg, was placed on probation for three years for aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, for possessing a synthetic cannabinoid compound on Dec. 21, 2021. She received credit for two days served in jail.
Grand Jury
LISBON -- Two people charged with theft for allegedly making false claims of displacement to secure reimbursement from Norfolk Southern over the East Palestine train derailment were among the defendants issued open indictments this week.
Juston Buskirk, 44, West Martin Street, East Palestine, was charged with fifth-degree felony theft for allegedly stealing $6,878 from Norfolk Southern. He allegedly filed a claim at the Norfolk Southern assistance center claiming he resided with a woman in East Palestine, that they were married and had four children when he didn't live in East Palestine, wasn't married to the woman and did not have four children. He received a check for $707 on Feb. 11 for lodging, food and child care, a check for $6,000 on Feb. 14 for relief for himself, the woman and four children and a check for $171 on Feb. 22 for incidental expenses.
Joey-Lynn Corfee, 34, Rose Drive, Lisbon, was charged with second-degree felony aggravated trafficking in drugs, third-degree felony possession of fentanyl-related compound, fifth degree felonies of theft, possession of cocaine and aggravated possession of drugs and misdemeanor possession of drugs. She was accused of stealing $7,090 from Norfolk Southern from March 10 through March 13. Corfee allegedly went to the Norfolk Southern assistance center and claimed she lived on Leake Street in East Palestine. She received $3,000 on Feb. 10 and $2,090 for furniture she purchased. She allegedly provided a fake rental agreement with a fictitious landlord for the property and an altered Ohio Edison electric bill as proof of residency.
For the drug charges, Corfee allegedly possessed 27.34 grams of methamphetamine, which is nine times the bulk amount, during a traffic stop in Columbiana on May 18. She also allegedly possessed fentanyl in an amount equal or greater than 5 grams but less than 10 grams, cocaine and tramadol. She allegedly possessed methamphetamine on May 4.
The grand jury met for two days, issuing 18 open indictments and 27 secret indictments. Secret indictments don't become public until the defendant is served with the indictment. All cases will be handled in Common Pleas Court with the exception of two cases that are being transferred back to county Municipal Court.
Those two cases include:
-- Kevin Frazier, 42, May Road, East Liverpool, misdemeanors of falsification and obstructing official business after he allegedly damaged the door of a trailer at Echo Dell Trailer Court in St. Clair Township on Nov. 15 to attempt entry and then fled on foot from police, giving police a false social security number after being caught.
-- Jesse Williams, 30, state Route 170, East Palestine, misdemeanors of criminal mischief and criminal trespass for allegedly trespassing in the North Main Street, Columbiana home of a woman he knew, defacing art which included her children's handprints by painting over the art and writing "I love you" and defacing the lid to a children's game, leaving a note for the woman on Feb. 21, 2022.
Other open indictments included:
-- Christopher Hyler, 35, Depot Road, Salem, three counts fourth-degree felony assault, fifth-degree felony harassment with a bodily substance, and misdemeanor resisting arrest. When the Columbiana County Drug Task Force, Perry Township Police and the Adult Parole Authority responded to Fresh Mark in Salem on Aug. 11 to conduct a warrant arrest on Hyler, he allegedly bit the finger of an officer, causing the finger to go numb, while the officer was attempting to stop him from spitting on an Adult Parole Authority officer. Hyler also allegedly kicked at a Perry Township officer while actively resisting arrest.
-- Sara Noling, 37, Wood Street, East Palestine, third-degree felonies of aggravated trafficking in drugs and aggravated possession of drugs and fourth-degree felony possession of fentanyl-related compound for allegedly possessing fentanyl in an amount equal or greater than 1 gram, but less than 5 grams and methamphetamine in an amount equal or greater than bulk, but less that five times bulk during an incident in East Palestine on Aug. 9.
-- Brian Randall Pearl, 54, East Clark Street, East Palestine, fourth-degree felony attempt to commit offense related to tampering with evidence and misdemeanor obstructing official business. Pearl allegedly attempted to eat a fold which contained alleged fentanyl after it was removed from his pocket during a traffic stop and placed on the bed of his truck on Nov. 8 in East Palestine.
-- William Munholand, 64, Gilson Road, Salem, fifth-degree felony illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premise and misdemeanor aggravated menacing. Munholand allegedly pulled a a firearm out of his pants and pointed it at a bartender at the Flying Pig Saloon in Salem on Oct. 23.
-- Matthew Hormel, 40, East Martin Street, East Palestine, third-degree felonies of tampering with evidence and failure to comply. Hormel allegedly fled from a sheriff's deputy attempting a traffic stop in Salem and was also observed allegedly throwing contraband out the window.
-- Harry Baum IV, 37, Wilbert Avenue, East Liverpool, charged with third-degree felony domestic violence for allegedly grabbing a woman and knocking her into a wall, causing her to strike her head on Aug. 28 in East Liverpool.
-- Fred Struble IV, 25, Chain School Road, East Palestine, third-degree felony strangulation and misdemeanor domestic violence for allegedly punching and scratching a woman in the face, pulling her across the floor and strangling her on Nov. 12 on Chain School Road, Unity Township.
-- Dustin Brooks, 36, Vine Street, East Liverpool, two counts fifth-degree felony violation of a protection order for allegedly being at a Vine Street, East Liverpool residence in violation of a protection order on Nov. 15.
-- Jerry Thompson, 38, Youngstown, second-degree felony burglary, fifth-degree felony breaking and entering and misdemeanors of theft, criminal mischief, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia for allegedly breaking into the Spinal Care Chiropractic Center in St. Clair Township on Nov. 8 and stealing a towel. A glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine was left on the front counter of the business.
-- Brandi Pulver, 31, Bulger, Pa., fifth-degree felony improper handling firearms in a motor vehicle and misdemeanor endangering children for allegedly possessing a loaded firearm while intoxicated during a traffic stop with a child in the back seat on Oct. 28 in Columbiana.
-- Alexander Morlan, 26, New Middletown, third-degree felony failure to notify of residence or address change for allegedly failing to notify the sheriff's office of a change in his address on Oct. 11, which was required since he's a registered sex offender.
-- Anthony Michael Beavers, 50, Altoona, Pa., third-degree felony compelling prostitution, fourth-degree felony attempting unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, fifth-degree felony possessing criminal tools and misdemeanor engaging in prostitution for allegedly responding to an undercover ad on a known prostitution website and arranging for sexual conduct and activity with a 15-year-old in exchange for $280, arriving in East Palestine on Nov. 6 for the meeting.
-- Jerry Lee Womack, 39, Youngstown, third-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs, specification for forfeiture of money in a drug case and misdemeanors of engaging in prostitution, possessing criminal tools and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia. On June 17 in East Palestine, he allegedly possessed 12.97 grams of methamphetamine after arriving for a meeting he had arranged for sex acts with a female in exchange for methamphetamine. He had responded to an undercover ad posted on a known prostitution website. The female was actually a police officer posing as a female online.
-- Douglas Austin, 40, Blakely Street, East Liverpool, fourth-degree felony domestic violence for allegedly punching a woman in the head and slamming her face off of the car dash before pulling her out of the car on Oct. 14 in East Liverpool.
