LISBON — A former Salem woman charged for purposely setting fire to her former marital home entered a guilty plea recently to three counts of aggravated arson, a first-degree felony, and a single count of aggravated arson, a second-degree felony.
Rebekah Humeniuk-Shaw, 41, Leesville, will face sentencing Oct. 16 in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
According to the felony plea agreement, the prosecution will recommend a total prison term of eight to 12 years. The maximum possible prison term would be 11 to 16.5 years for the first-degree felonies and eight to 12 years for the second-degree felony.
A fourth-degree felony arson charge will be dismissed and she’ll be required to register as an arson offender, according to the plea agreement.
When she was served with the secret indictment, county Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino said she was accused of attempting to burn down the home at 838 E. Fifth St., Salem, which had been the marital home before her divorce.
Court records in county Common Pleas Court show the divorce case was filed in May 2021 by Thomas Shaw, her now ex-husband. The fire occurred a month later on June 18, 2021, as listed on the indictment.
The three first-degree felony charges alleged that she knowingly caused a substantial risk of harm to Thomas Shaw, Vicki Hensley and a child by means of fire or explosion. The second-degree felony addressed the harm caused to the home, and the other arson charge stemmed from causing harm to the property of Thomas Shaw and various household items.
