Palestine man marks 80th year

EAST PALESTINE — John D. Bender celebrated his 80th birthday on Monday. 

He was born in Ellwood City, Pa. on Aug. 17, 1940, the son of the late John and Eleanor Bender. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958 and joined the Army, stationed at Fort Tilden in New York as a Nike missile tracking operator from 1958 to 1961. He married Joyce M. Simoff in 1966, and they made their home in East Palestine, raising three children, John Bender of Front Royal, Va, Julie Limpach of Elyria, Ohio and Michael Bender, East Palestine.

He worked as a crane operator beginning in 1962 and put in 26 years at the B&W Steel Mill. He put in another 13 years at Koppel Steel, retiring in 2002. He also worked at the Kenmar Manufacturing Company.

He enjoys sitting on the back porch reading and watching the Steelers, Pens and Pirates. He has three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
