Second chance for Devils

Lisbon 67, Leetonia 50

LEETONIA — Lisbon clawed its way back to a two-way tie for first in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference by way of a 67-50 win over Leetonia coupled with a Columbiana loss to Valley Christian on Friday.

Lisbon is 13-4 and 11-2 in the EOAC. The Blue Devils were set to clinch on Saturday at East Palestine but that game was postponed due to weather. It will be made up at a later date. Columbiana’s next league game isn’t until Feb. 18 at last-place Southern.

AJ Ramgeet led the winners with 21 points, six assists and nine rebounds. Aidan Ramgeet added 16 points. Blaine Barnes chipped in 14 points, while Logan Sturgeon had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Lisbon is also headed to the OVAC Class 2A tournament. The Devils earned the No. 4 seed and will travel to No. 1 seed Toronto on Tuesday.

Dylan Brown had 16 points for the Bears (5-15 overall and 3-11 in the EOAC). Ethan Mathia added 13 points.

The Bears host Sebring on Thursday.

Lisbon won the jayvee game, 29-15. Cooper Terdina had eight points for the Devils. Camden Price had seven points for the Bears.

Wellsville 51, United 42

HANOVERTON — Austin Adkins hit for 26 points as Wellsville walked away with a 51-42 win over United on Friday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference action.

Darnell Roe had 16 points and five assists. Andrew Mackey had nine boards.

Wellsville is 9-11 and 9-5 in the EOAC. The Tigers will host Indian Creek on Tuesday in an OVAC consolation game. Wellsville will close out the regular season next Friday at River.

Kota Shasteen had 24 points to lead the Eagles.

United won the jayvee game, 53-47. Gavin Coffee had 16 points for the Eagles. Eric Dowling had 15 points for Tigers.

United hosts Oak Glen on Tuesday.

East Palestine 76, Southern 56

SALINEVILLE — Drew Bycroft had 20 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Kealin Simon had 20 points and three rebounds in East Palestine’s 76-56 win over Southern on Friday.

RJ May added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists for the winners, 3-14 and 3-10 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Southern fell to 2-17 and 0-13. Jack Pitts scored 21 for the Indians, while Jacob McCurdy added 15.

East Palestine will host Lisbon today to close out league play. Southern hosts Madonna on Tuesday.

Heartland 72, Youngstown East 63

COLUMBIANA — Heartland Christian paid back Youngstown East with a fourth-quarter comeback.

Senior Isaiah Matthews scored eight points during Heartland’s 23-9 run in the final period as the Lions rallied past the Golden Bears, 72-63, Friday.

Heartland improves to 15-4, which included a 61-56 loss at Youngstown East three weeks ago.

Collin Kalaher scored a game-high 30 points for the Lions. He hit three three-pointers and was 3-for-3 at the foul line.

Matthews followed with 11 points and fellow senior Corban Seutia added eight points in the first half. Brody Conaway had six of his nine points in the fourth quarter.

The Lions have won five in a row heading into an OVAC Class A semifinal. They will host Conotton Valley on Tuesday. The Rockets defeated Southern 58-27 on Jan. 10.

The Golden Bears led by 11 points at 23-12 in the first quarter and 28-17 in the second quarter. East led 36-33 at halftime and 54-49 through three quarters.

Heartland started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run, capped by a Conaway fastbreak layup, to take a 58-54 lead with six minutes to play.

East tied the score at 58-58, but Heartland took control from there.

Conaway had a steal and layup to give the Lions a 66-61 lead at the 1:57 mark.

Reagan Kalaher followed with a layup for a 68-63 lead.

In the final 36 seconds, Matthews and Reagan Kalaher added free throws and Collin Kalaher hit two more.

Kor’dae Phifer topped East with 17 points. Alberto Maldonado 15 points and Tyris Davis scored eight, half his average.

Davis, a 6-foot-2 senior, signed Wednesday to play defensive back for the Youngstown State University football team. He committed to YSU in June.

West Branch 65, Salem 29

BELOIT — West Branch has set the table for a possible outright Eastern Buckeye Conference title after a 65-29 win over Salem on Friday.

The Warriors moved to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in the league. West Branch is tied with Alliance for the league lead. The Warriors will play at Alliance for the title on Feb. 14.

Leading the Warriors against Salem was Gavin Gregory with 13 points and five rebounds. Jeremiah Thomas had 11 points, three assists and three steals. Grady Hirst had 10 points and five rebounds.

Salem fell to 4-13 and 0-9 in the EBC. Salem hosts Newton Falls on Tuesday. Deontay Steele had 11 points for Salem. Jak Andres added seven points and three rebounds.

West Branch won the jayvee game, 46-26. Luke Curry and Brock Woost had 10 points each for the Warriors.

Brookfield 67, Crestview 35

COLUMBIANA –Brookfield jumped out to a 16-2 in the opening 4 1/2 minutes and ran past Crestview, 67-35, in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Tier play Friday.

The Warriors held quarter leads of 26-5, 46-17 and 59-25, respectively.

Brookfield improves to 11-6 overall and 9-4 in MVAC play. The Rebels drop to 7-13 and 3-10 in league play.

Brookfield will play at Valley Christian on Monday, while Crestview hosts Jackson-Milton on Feb. 17.
