High-scoring Kellogg just one of the pieces

HANOVERTON — With teams concentrating on slowing down Southern freshman standout Katie Kellogg, it opens things up for the rest of the Indians.

Senior Allyssa Shroades took her turn Monday as she made four three-pointers in the first quarter and six total for 20 points to complement Kellogg’s 24 points, 11 assists and eight steals in Southern’s 64-33 win over United in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference opener.

The Indians are off to a 4-0 start, while the Eagles drop to 0-2.

Kellogg is averaging 30.8 points and 8.3 assists a game and the Indians are giving her plenty of help as they average 70.3 points per contest.

Makenna Jones added 10 points and Kalayah Crute six points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Indians. Haylee Kellogg and Maddy Jones each grabbed three rebounds. Shroades added three steals and two assists.

Katie Kellogg dished out five assists in the first quarter and Shroades connected on four three-pointers in the final four minutes to give the Indians a 22-6 lead after one period of play.

Katie Kellogg added eight points in the second quarter for a 39-14 halftime lead and 12 points in the third quarter to help the Indians build a 60-28 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Reagan Good topped the Eagles with 10 points. Maelee Smith added eight points.

There was no junior varsity game.

United travels to Malvern on Wednesday and Southern plays East Palestine in the Indians’ home opener on Thursday. The Indians will have a junior high game at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at around 6:30 p.m.

EAST PALESTINE — East Palestine’s girls basketball team earned its first win of the season by downing Leetonia 55-18 on Monday.

East Palestine is 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Jacklyn Ogle had 24 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs. Violet Glavan added 10 points. Destiney Burtyk added six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Amara Wilson had six steals.

East Palestine is at Southern on Thursday. Leetonia (0-1) hosts Lisbon Thursday.

LISBON — Lisbon’s girls basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 38-33 win over Valley Christian on Monday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Lylah Brown had 19 points and five rebounds for Lisbon. Jayden Smyth added seven points, five assists, two steals and two blocks.

Lisbon will be at Leetonia on Thursday.

WELLSVILLE — Columbiana’s girls basketball team downed Wellsville 80-8 on Monday. Evy Rapp had 25 points, while Annah Clemmer added 15 points for the Clippers.

Columbiana (2-1, 1-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference) hosts Valley on Thursday.

Wellsville (0-3, 0-1) hosts United on Thursday.

Crestview 61, Maplewood 45

COLUMBIANA — Crestview’s girls basketball team came away with a 61-45 win over Maplewood on Monday.

Addison Rhodes scored 33 points and became the Crestview all-time leader for threes in a career as she now has 160.

Ava Bucey added 14 points.

The Rebels are 2-0 and will be at Howland on Wednesday.

Edison 66, Beaver Local 27

RICHMOND — Beaver Local’s girls basketball team suffered a 66-27 road defeat to Edison on Monday.

Mya Anderson led the Beavers with seven points, while Mercedes McCullough added five points. Beaver Local is 2-1.

Edison won the jayvee game, 42-21. Macie Bourne had five points for the Beavers.

Beaver Local is at Indian Creek on Thursday.

EAST CANTON — East Canton ran away with a 53-31 victory over Heartland Christian on Monday.

Heartland is 0-2 and hosts Edison on Thursday.
