Cleveland Glenville wraps up third title in four years

CANTON — Cleveland Glenville capped a dominant postseason run with a 45-7 win over Shelby in the Division IV state championship Friday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

The title is the Tarblooders’ third in four seasons.

Glenville broke the game open in the first quarter on a record-setting 92-yard punt return for a touchdown by Jacquan Gibson, the longest in OHSAA state-championship history.

The Tarblooders controlled the line of scrimmage throughout, holding Shelby to 27 total yards and minus-11 rushing yards — the fewest ever recorded in an OHSAA title game.

Game MVP Romell Phillips led Glenville with 133 yards on 14 carries, while quarterback Arvell Nelson added two second-half scoring passes to put the game out of reach.

Shelby quarterback Brayden DeVito, the Ohio Mr. Football runner-up, was 3-of-18 passing for 38 yards and was sacked four times.

The Whippets, making their first state final appearance, finishes at 14-1, which included 12 running-clock victories.
