Lisbon shoots for another title

LISBON — Veteran Lisbon will be shooting for its third title in the past four years in the annual Lisbon Tip-Off Tournament after rolling to an 86-30 running clock win over the Academy of Urban Scholars during the tourney semifinals in Nace Gymnasium Friday night.

“We have three (starters back), we had two seniors last year that played a ton,” said veteran Lisbon head coach Chris Huckshold. “But I have a lot of kids back — four lettermen.”

The experience showed on the court as Lisbon took charge early against an inexperienced Hawks’ team and never looked back.

“We have no seniors, a lot of juniors and we’re working with what we have,” said Urban Scholars first-year head coach Zach Christian. “I know Lisbon is a good team and I knew it was going to be a hard-fought game and we got what we expected.”

The Blue Devils (1-0) will meet Heartland Christian (1-0) in the title game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Heartland advanced to the title contest with a 77-51 triumph over defending tournament champion Mogadore in Friday’s other semifinal.

Lisbon, which has four seniors in its starting lineup from a squad that won 13 games last season, placed four players in double figures.

Leading the offensive onslaught was senior standout AJ Ramgeet, who took game-scoring honors with 29 points, including a three-pointer.

“I was nervous, first game of the year,” said Ramgeet, who made the all-tournament team in the event last year. “After a couple minutes, we got it going and came out and got 86 (points).”

“He (AJ) and Aidan (Ramgeet, who added six points) are both my nephews and they play hard,” said Huckshold.

Joining in the double figures outburst for the Blue Devils were Blaine Barnes (17 points), Ashton Hinchliffe (12 points) and Aiden Myers with 11 points.

Leading the Hawks was Kam Black with 16 points, while teammate Louis Henderson added nine points.

“He (Black) is our main scorer,” said Christian.

The Blue Devils wasted little time setting the tempo against the Urban Scholars as they jumped out to a 31-13 lead over the Hawks.

The Blue Devils’ defense really clamped down on the Hawks in the second frame, outscoring them 31-4 while taking a commanding 62-17 lead into the locker room, which started a running clock in the second half. AJ Ramgeet had 22 of his points in the opening 16 minutes.

“Last year we went 13-10, so this year we want to improve on that and we want to stay consistent throughout the season,” said Ramgeet.

Possessing a huge lead, Huckshold substituted freely throughout the second half and pulled all of his starters out with 7:10 left in the game and the hosts holding a 54-point (77-23) advantage.

The Blue Devil backups finished out the game while still outscoring the Hawks 11-7 in the remaining time.

Huckshold said there are a few things the Blue Devils still need to work on, but he was pleased overall with Lisbon’s opening night effort.

“I was just upset with some of the mental mistakes and some situational things, but we got out, we ran, and it’s better than a scrimmage,” he said. “You’ve got to get some reps in and we’ll see where it goes. It will be a lot different (in the championship game). We’ll go out and we’ll see if we can put a good effort on the floor against Heartland.”

Urban Scholars will play Mogadore in the consolation game of the Lisbon Tip-Off Tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by the Lisbon-Heartland Christian title game at 7:30 p.m.
