United rules EOAC

COLUMBIANA — United took the hard road to an outright Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title.

After losing its first league game of the season on Monday to Columbiana, the Eagles needed to win on Wednesday to prevent the Clippers from possibly gaining a share. East Palestine was also in play coming into Wednesday as the Bulldogs had two league losses.

Battling rain and incoming darkness, the Eagles squeaked out an 8-3 win in 10 innings at Firestone Park.

Quentin Taylor’s RBI double with one out in the top of the 10th gave the Eagles the lead. Then Cavan Jackson added a three-run double to extend the advantage to 7-3. Wyatt Swanson’s RBI single pushed the lead to five.

The Eagles scored three in the first inning — thanks to a Parker Newburn two-run double — to set the tone, but Columbiana managed to come back.

Hunter Davanzo’s RBI double in the fourth got the Clippers on the board then Columbiana got a run on an error and another on a Reese Roush RBI single in the fifth to tie the game.

Taylor managed to get the win for the Eagles as he went 2 1/3 innings of relief with four strikeouts and two walks. Newburn started for the Eagles and had 11 strikeouts and two walks in 7 2/3 innings. Newburn threw 127 pitches.

Ethan Lehnerd took the loss for Coumbiana as he gave up five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. He had five strikeouts and six walks.

United (18-6, 11-1 in the EOAC) is at Salem on Friday night.

Columbiana (11-13, 9-3 in the EOAC) is at Howland Saturday.

East Palestine 9, Southern 2

SALINEVILLE — East Palestine got two doubles, a single and three RBIs from Kyler Bourne in a 9-2 win over Southern Local in six innings on Wednesday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Phoenix Marvin added a triple and three RBIs.

Marvin was also the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

Southern scattered three hits through the lineup. Mason Sosack took the loss with no strikeouts and three walks in two innings.

East Palestine (16-7, 9-2 in the EOAC) hosts Martins Ferry today.

Southern (2-14, 1-11 in the EOAC) hosts Chaney today.

Beaver Local 8, Lisbon 4

CALCUTTA — Matt Anderson had a single, double and three RBIs, while Jhett Boyd had a single and double as Beaver Local beat Lisbon 8-4 in regular season baseball action on Wednesday.

Braxton Hickman got the win with nine strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Bryce Esarey took the loss with with six strikeouts and three walks in four innings.

Logan Sturgeon led Lisbon with a hit and two RBIs.

Beaver Local (5-15) is at East Liverpool on Friday.

Lisbon (10-8) hosts Liberty on Friday.

Bristol 8, Heartland 4

BRISTOLVILLE — A five-run fifth inning helped open the gates for a Bristol 8-4 win over Heartland on Wednesday in regular season baseball action.

Owen Bender had two hits and two RBIs for the Lions. Evan Farrell and Alex Hamilton had two hits each.

Hamilton took the loss with no strikeouts or walks in three innings.

Heartland is 4-13 and will host Edison today.

Martins Ferry 14, East Liverpool 0

EAST LIVERPOOL — East Liverpool managed just one hit in a 14-0 loss to Martins Ferry in five innings on Wednesday.

Kasen Ramsey had the Potters’ lone hit.

Grant Wright was the losing pitcher with two strikeouts and five walks in three innings.

East Liverpool (1-19) hosts Beaver Local Friday.

Tyler 8, Oak Glen 1

SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s baseball team was eliminated from the Class AA, Region 1 tournament with a 8-1 loss to Tyler Consolidated on Wednesday.

The Golden Bears also lost to Tyler 5-1 on Monday in the double elimination tournament.

Maddox McKay had two hits for the Bears.

Josh Maher was the losing pitcher with two strikeouts and a walk in 2 2/3 innings.

Oak Glen is 12-18.
