State champs exit early

BELOIT — West Branch came into the season as a reigning state baseball champion.

It went out with a 5-4 loss in eight innings to Girard in a Div. IV sectional opener on Saturday.

Dominic Phillips was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the eighth to give the Indians the win.

Charlie Biskup went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Warriors, 10-18. Jeremiah Thomas had two hits.

Carson Wike took the loss in relief with two walks in a third of an inning.

Girard, the 13th seed, will travel to No. 5 seed Perry on Tuesday for a district semifinal.

West Branch was the 18th seed.

Columbiana 1

MINERAL RIDGE — Columbiana became the sixth Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference baseball team to drop its sectional open on Saturday after Mineral Ridge dispatched the Clippers 7-1 in a Div. VI sectional contest.

Avery Young led the 14th seeded Clippers (11-16) with two hits, while Reese Roush took the loss on the mound with three strikeouts and five walks in three innings.

Jackson Geddes went 2 for 4 for the sixth seeded Rams who will host No. 16 seed Dalton on Wednesday in the district.

Kidron CC 10,

Leetonia 0

KIDRON — Leetonia exited the Div. VII sectional tournament on Saturday with a 10-0 loss to Kidron Central Christian.

Ryan Bulford had the Bears’ lone hit. He also took the loss with four strikeouts and six walks in four innings.

Leetonia, the 15th seed, finishes the season 6-13.

Kidron, the 10th seed, will travel to Western Reserve on Wednesday for a district contest.

Hubbard 10, Salem 0

HUBBARD — Salem wrapped up its baseball season with a 10-0 loss to Hubbard in five innings in a Div. IV sectional contest on Saturday.

Braydon Songer threw a no-hitter for the Eagles as he struck out 11 and walked three.

Colin Riesen took the loss for the Quakers with four strikeouts and three walks in three innings.

Salem, the 35th seed, falls to 3-20.

Hubbard, the seventh seed, will hold No. 19 seed Sheffield Brookside on Tuesday in the district.

Western Reserve 6, Heartland 0

BERLIN CENTER — Heartland Christian’s baseball season came to an end with a 6-0 loss to Western Reserve on Saturday in a Div. VII sectional contest.

Evan Farrell led the Lions with two hits. Alex Hamilton was the losing pitcher with no strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Heartland, the 16th seed, is 5-15.

Western Reserve, the sixth seed, will host Kidron Central Christian on Wednesday in the district semifinal.
