Southern, Heartland bow out in semifinals

HANNIBAL — The Pilots sent Southern Local down the river.

River swept away Southern, 58-25, in an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 2A semifinal Monday.

River (12-8) advances to play top-seeded Steubenville Catholic Central — a 64-37 winner over Toronto — in the OVAC final at the ECO Center on Saturday.

Southern (12-9) which plays Toronto on Thursday. Southern won both regular-season games against Toronto.

Cameron 68, Heartland 30

CAMERON, W.Va. — The Cameron Dragons have plenty of experience winning.

Senior Maci Neely — the lone returning starter from Cameron’s three straight Class A state championship teams — scored a game-high 18 points in a 68-30 win over Heartland Christian in an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class A semifinal Monday.

The Dragons scored the first 10 points on the way to building a 24-7 lead in the first quarter and 35-13 by halftime.

Freshman Kendra Thomas hit four three-pointers in the first half on the way to a 17-point night.

Cameron will play top-seeded Frontier — a 62-19 winner over Weirton Madonna — in Saturday’s final at the ECO Center.

Rachel Reynolds topped Heartland with eight points.

Heartland, now 10-9, will play Madonna on Thursday.

Oak Glen 46, Edison 32

RICHMOND — Oak Glen broke open a close game in the second half to beat Edison, 46-32, in an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 4A semifinal Monday.

After playing to an 18-18 tie at halftime, the Golden Bears outscored the Wildcats 28-14 in the second half to pull away.

Oak Glen improves to 11-6 and will play top-seeded Harrison Central — a 46-44 winner over Indian Creek — in the OVAC final at the ECO Center on Saturday.

The Wildcats were led by Sophia Henderson with 13 points. Abby Carpenter, Kylee Stull and Mimi Ault added six points apiece.

Edison drops to 15-5, which includes a 64-50 loss to Oak Glen on Jan. 22.
