CLEVELAND — Columbiana senior Preston Buckingham is headed back to the Div. II state swimming meet.

Buckingham placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.52) and third in the 200 individual medley (1:57.74) on Friday at the district meet at Cleveland State University.

The top three individual finishers and top two relay finishers automatically advance to the state meet set for Feb. 20-21 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Last season, Buckingham finished ninth in the breaststroke (58.58) and 13th in the 200 IM (2:00.87) at state.

Salem junior Ryan Folger did not earn an automatic state berth but he is almost certain to return to Canton as he was eighth in the 100 backstroke (54.28) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (51.98).

Folger took 10th in the butterfly (51.84) and 30th in the breaststroke (1:01.87) at last year’s state meet.

Several area girls swimmers will be on the bubble as far as at-large state bids are concerned. Columbiana’s Elena Mackall, Columbiana’s Victoria Buckingham and Crestview’s Kyla Pancake will have to wait to see how the rest of the statewide districts play out to see if they will qualify for Canton.

Div. II East

ATHENS — Beaver Local’s Cole Long is headed back to the state swimming meet.

The sophomore finished second in the Div. II 200 individual medley (1:58.08) on Friday at tue Ohio University district meet to earn his spot at the state swimming championships.

The top three individual finishers and top two relay finishers automatically advance to the state meet set for Feb. 20-21 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. All the rest of the spots are determined by at-large bids.

Long was also fifth in the 100 backstroke (53.7).

Last season, Long was 18th in the 200 IM (2:01.11) and 28th in the backstroke (56.0) at state.

At-large state qualifiers will be announced by Sunday.
