Southern stays busy

SALINEVILLE — Playing for a second straight night, Southern got its second wind to surge past Valley Christian, 56-38, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Thursday.

Southern improves to 10-5 overall and 7-2 in league play.

Valley took an early 11-3 lead as the Eagles had their highest-scoring game in two years. The 38 points are their most in the last 40 games, when they have posted a 3-37 record.

Allyssa Shroades topped the Indians with a game-high 16 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Makenna Jones totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Maddy Jones had nine points, nine rebounds and three steals, Haylee Kellogg eight points and three rebounds and Hailey Maines three rebounds and three steals.

Southern’s bench outscored Valley’s, 29-0, for the difference.

The Indians were 3-of-15 from the foul line, including 1-of-10 in the second half.

Valley connected on three three-pointers in the opening 3 1/2 minutes to take an 11-3 lead. Shroades hit two three-pointers and Maddy Jones had another to give the Indians the lead for good at 17-15 through one quarter of play.

The Eagles trailed 22-20 with 5:46 remaining in the second quarter, but was held to three free throws the rest of the quarter as Southern took a 30-23 lead.

Southern’s lead got down to five at 33-28 in the third quarter, but the Indians defense took over by holding Valley to five points in the final 11 minutes. The Eagles were within 37-30 with 3:06 left in the third quarter, but managed only a layup with 6:39 left in the game and a three-pointer with three seconds remaining.

Southern will host Leetonia for a varsity-only contest at 6 p.m. Monday.

Columbiana 74, Leetonia 16

LEETONIA — Columbiana is going to be tough to beat in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Confernce.

The Clippers beat Leetonia, 74-16, Thursday.

Columbiana improves to 13-0 overall and 7-0 in the EOAC. The Clippers have won every league game by at least 29 points.

Both teams return to league play Monday as Columbiana visits East Palestine and Leetonia travels to Southern on Monday.

Wellsville 44, Lisbon 41

WELLSVILLE — Wellsville survived 18 missed free throws to beat Lisbon, 44-41, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Thursday.

Bella Poppelriter led the Tigers with a game-high 21 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Myleigh Jackson collected 10 points, 10 rebounds and five steals before fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Kenzie Bosco added nine points and eight rebounds and Johnnie Tice grabbed seven rebounds.

The Tigers improve to 6-7 overall and 5-3 in the EOAC. The Blue Devils lost their sixth straight to fall to 3-10 and 2-6 in league play.

Lisbon closed within 41-39 with 2:07 remaining. Wellsville made three free throws in the final 58 seconds for a 44-39 lead until Lisbon added a layup with six seconds to play. The Tigers missed nine free throws in the fourth quarter and finished 14-of-32 from the foul line.

Lisbon freshman Bridgett Newbold scored a team-high 20 points. Lylah Brown contributed eight points.

Lisbon will host Toronto on Saturday, while Wellsville visits Valley Christian on Monday.

HANOVERTON — Freshman Maelee Smith had 29 points, six rebounds and four steals as United took care of East Palestine 47-16 on Thursday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference action.

Freshman Reagan Good added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, 7-6, 7-1. Maezie French had four rebounds and four steals.

Jacklyn Ogle had six points for the Bulldogs, 3-10, 1-7.

United will host Marlington Saturday.
