Buchheit, Hughes triumph at OVAC

WHEELING, W.Va. — One established veteran and one rising star made a big impact for the Beaver Local wrestling team on Saturday at the 71st annual Ron Mauck Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Wrestling Tournament at Wesbanco Arena.

Junior Bobby Buchheit won his third straight OVAC title by scoring a 21-6 technical fall win over Zander Ward of John Marshall in the 138-pound final.

Buchheit (24-3) came into the tournament seeded third, while Ward (20-8) was fourth. The Beaver standout, ranked fourth in the state in Div. II at 138 by BoroFanOhio, was coming off an Eastern Ohio Wrestling League title the week before.

Beaver Local freshman Jake Hughes earned his first OVAC title a short time later as he scored a 2-0 decision over Slaton Pettit of Cameron in the 150-pound final.

Hughes (26-3) was seeded second while Pettit (20-2) was seeded first.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve won this, so this feels good,” Beaver Local head coach Johnny McComas said. “We’ve got a combination of some great young wrestlers and some great leaders.”

Nine out of the 14 weight classes were won by the top seed.

Beaver Local ended up finishing first as a team in Class 4A. The two champs helped Beaver Local slip past Steubenville, 183-182.5, for second place overall.

Beaver Local senior Justuce Fisher (21-6) finished second at 106 pounds after losing an 8-3 decision to Linsly’s Brock Humphrey (20-6) in the final.

Oak Glen ended finishing in the runner-up slot behind Beaver Local in Class 4A.

The Golden Bears’ Aiden Anderson (17-10) lost his 113-pound final by a 16-5 major decision to University’s Pepper Martin (24-3).

East Liverpool’s Tristan Eckles, who was seeded first at 120, fell to Union Local’s Gamble Gossett by a 7-6 decision in the final.

Eckles is 31-1 on the season, while Gossett is now 28-3.

Southern Local’s Johnny Bailey (25-2) also punched his ticket to the 190-pound final but he was turned away by a 16-1 technical fall loss to Jameson Maynard (16-0) of Wheeling Park.

Notes

¯ University’s Brock Kehler captured his third straight OVAC Ron Mauck championship with a first-period pin in the 285-pound finals of Harrison Central’s Landen Thomas in 1-minute, 48-seconds. He also pinned Thomas in last year’s finals.

For his efforts, the West Virginia University recruit was voted the David Bierkortte Award winner as the Most Outstanding Wrestler and he won the Hercules Award for most pins in the championship bracket in the least amount of time. Kehler advanced to the finals with four pins in less than 45 seconds each.
