Beaver Local surges past Oak Glen

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local let Oak Glen hang around for a half.

The Beavers rallied from a five-point deficit and used a 41-point second half to pull away from the Golden Bears for a 66-46 win Friday.

Owen Hill powered the Beavers with a game-high 24 points. Taylor Johnston had three three-pointers for nine points. Matt Anderson and Luke Rettis added eight apiece.

The Beavers improve to 9-3, while the Golden Bears lost their seventh straight game to fall to 4-8.

Gavin Geisse topped Oak Glen with nine points. Mason Kell contributed eight.

The Bears got two three-pointers from Tyler Evans and another from Geisse to go ahead 19-14 with 2:31 remaining in the second quarter.

The Bears had only four turnovers in the first half, but three of them came in the final two minutes and the Beavers took advantage.

Hill scored five points and Hunter Warrick and Anderson each added two to put the Beavers ahead 25-22 at halftime.

Beaver Local had 10 turnovers in the first half and turned it around in the second half, outscoring Oak Glen 41-25.

The Beavers also won the junior varsity game, 50-18, as Peyton Cowdery scored 11 points and Max Crabtree nine.

Beaver Local will play at Hubbard on Saturday. Oak Glen hosts Wellsville on Tuesday.

Steubenvile 80, East Liverpool 43

STEUBENVILLE — East Liverpool’s boys basketball team could not keep up with the Steubenville juggernaut on Friday as Big Red ran away with an 80-43 win.

It was the Potters’ biggest loss of the season.

Steubenville is 11-1, while the Potters fell to 11-3.

Tre’von Wiggins had 24 points for Big Red.

Cohen Pease and Blake Adkins had 10 points each for the Potters.

East Liverpool will start a five-game road swing at Mooney on Tuesday.

LIBERTY — Jonathan Best had 10 points to lead Crestview’s boys basketball team over Liberty 35-29 on Friday as part of a boy-girl doubleheader.

Tyler Savage and Issac Unkefer added seven points each for the winners.

Crestview is 3-10 and 1-5 in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey Division.

Crestview is at Lowellville Saturday.

SALEM — JR Jackson scored 21 points in three quarters as Alliance doubled up Salem, 68-32, in Eastern Buckeye Conference play Friday.

Jackson scored 17 points in the first half as the Aviators took a 32-13 lead.

Alliance improves to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the EBC, one games ahead of second-place Carrollton. Salem lost its eighth straight to drop to 4-10 and 1-5 in the EBC. The Quakers are averaging 40.7 points a game during their losing streak.

Deontay Steele paced the Quakers with 11 points. Ty Manion added eight.

Salem will play at Minerva on Tuesday.

MINERVA — Eight West Branch players got in the scoring column Friday during a 47-36 Eastern Buckeye Conference win over Minerva.

Cooper Anderson led the Warriors with 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Camden Lane and Joey Jackson each scored nine points. Jeremiah Thomas added seven points and three rebounds. Gavin Gregory returned to the lineup with four points and three rebounds. Zach Coffee grabbed four rebounds.

West Branch improves to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the EBC. Minerva is 6-7 and 3-3 in league play.

Jayden Yerger topped Minerva with 13 points.

Both teams return to EBC play Tuesday as West Branch hosts Marlington and Minerva entertains Salem.
