Eagles golden in EOAC

HANOVERTON — United got 24 points from freshman Maelee Smith and remained unbeaten in the East Ohio Athletic Conference with a 42-34 win over Southern on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles are 5-4 overall, but 5-0 in the EOAC, tied for first place with Columbiana and Wellsville. United plays at Beaver Local on Dec. 28 before key league games at Wellsville Jan. 2 and at Columbiana Jan. 6.

Marin Stryffeler contributed eight points and three steals to the winning effort. Bailey McKenzie had six points and seven rebounds, Camryn Cody seven rebounds and four steals and Allyson Lacey eight steals and five assists. Smith added seven rebounds and four steals.

Leading the Indians were Allyssa Shroades with 15 points, Makenna Jones six points, six rebounds and four steals, Haylee Kellogg 10 rebounds and Maddy Jones seven rebounds and three assists.

Southern is 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the EOAC. The Indians will play at Valley Christian at noon Saturday.

East Palestine 32, Leetonia 23

EAST PALESTINE — East Palestine outscored Leetonia 13-5 in the fourth quarter to hold off Leetonia for a 32-23 win Thursday.

The Bulldogs improve to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Freshman Jacklyn Ogle led East Palestine with a game-high 12 points. Emma Gingher contributed six points and five rebounds, Marley Blythe six points and seven rebounds and Alivia Magness four steals.

Taylor Champman scored eight points and Starr Neel six for the Bears, who drop to 0-7 and 0-4 in league play.

East Palestine will host Lisbon at noon Saturday.

LISBON — Lisbon snapped a four-game losing streak with a 51-28 win over Valley Christian on Thursday.

Lylan Brown led the charge with a game-high 23 points. Jayden Smyth added 10 and Bridgett Newbold seven.

The Blue Devils improve to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

Kayvonna Crockett scored 14 points for the Eagles, followed by Aaliyah Underwood with seven.

Jackson-Milton 49, Heartland 48

COLUMBIANA — Sophomore Emma Johns scored 20 points as Jackson-Milton held off Heartland Christian, 49-48, Thursday.

Jackson-Milton built leads of 8-0 and 22-8 before Heartland rallied in the second half.

The Blue Jays led 42-34 with 5:56 left in the game. The score stayed that way for three minutes until Rachel Reynolds scored off an offensive rebound to close the gap to 42-36 with 2:52 remaining.

An Emme Matthews three-pointer cut the deficit to 48-46 with 15 seconds to play. Jackson-Milton hit a free throw with 5.7 seconds remaining to push the lead to 49-46. Heartland was left with four players due to foul trouble and Matthews was fouled on a three-point shot with 0.3 seconds to play. She missed the first and made the next two for the final score.

Sarah Reynolds paced the Lions with 13 points. Rachel Reynolds and Emily McDowell scored 10 apiece and Matthews added nine.

CALCUTTA — Minerva outscored Beaver Local 30-3 in the second half for a 58-15 win Thursday.

Minerva evens its record at 4-4, while the Beavers drop to 3-6.

Lilah Sanor scored a game-high 20 points for the Lions. Lillian Stoltzfus was right behind with 17 points and Kyleigh Lippincott added eight.

Brylee Curtis and Tori Druschel each scored four points for the Beavers.

Beaver Local on the junior varsity game, 35-34, as Brylee Curtis and Leah Schrieber each scored seven points. Emma Curtis had eight points for Minerva.

Beaver Local plays at Columbiana on Dec. 23.
