Wood named OVAC’s top player
CALCUTTA — Beaver Local senior Ethan Wood was named the 2024 Class 4A Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Soccer Player of the Year.
He posted 38 goals and 16 assists for the Beavers who reached the Div. IV regional tournament.
Three-peat for Mentor Lake Catholic
DAYTON — Top-ranked Mentor Lake Catholic made it three state titles in a row as the Cougars rolled over Middletown Bishop Fenwick, 25-18, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20, in a Division V state championship match Friday.
Four Cougars had double-digit kills in a balanced attack at Wright State University’s Nutter Center. Ahnna Bergant collected 16 kills and four blocks, Ava Budrys Rini 12 kills and seven blocks, Natalya Bergant 11 kills and three blocks and Avery Burys Rini 10 kills and one block.
Lake Catholic, which handed Crestview its only loss of the season in the regional semifinal, finishes the season at 24-4. Two of the losses were to Gates Mills Gilmour Academy. Second-ranked Gilmour Academy won the Division III state title by beating No. 3 Cincinnati Ursuline Academy, 25-20, 25-22, 28-30, 25-22, Friday. Another one of the Cougars’ losses was to Division III state semifinalist Columbus Bishop Watterson.
Gregory scores nine in YSU debut
YOUNGSTOWN — Former West Branch All-Ohioan Sophia Gregory totaled nine points and eight rebounds in her collegiate debut as the Youngstown State women’s basketball team defeated Division II Lake Erie College, 95-39, in Friday’s season opener at Beeghly Center.
Gregory was 4-of-6 from the field and collected five offensive rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block in 12 minutes of action.
Youngstown State sophomore Abbie Davidson from Salem was 0-for-1 from the field with one rebound in five minutes.
The Penguins will host St. Bonaventure at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
