Mount Union, John Carroll top OAC

ALLIANCE — Mount Union and John Carroll took top honors on the All-Ohio Athletic Conference football team heading into their weekend matchup.

Mount Union collected two individual awards and six first-teamers, while John Carroll had three individual awards for the first time since 2013 and nine first-teamers.

Mount Union (10-0) will host John Carroll (9-2) in an NCAA Division III second-round playoff game at Kehres Stadium at noon Saturday. Mount Union beat John Carroll, 37-31, on Sept. 21.

Purple Raiders head coach Geoff Darrt was named the Larry Kehres OAC Coach the Year and senior running back Tyler Echeverry and Marietta senior quarterback Connor Vierstra were named Co-Bob Packard Offensive Back of the Year.

Dartt led the Raiders to an OAC championship and undefeated regular reason in all five seasons as head coach. He has a 52-3 career record.

Echeverry leads the conference and is tied for first nationally in NCAA Division III with 20 rushing touchdowns this season. Echeverry is averaging 111.8 yards rushing a game and 8.8 yards.

Joining Echeverry on the All-OAC first team for the Purple Raiders are senior defensive lineman Rossy Moore (on the first team a third straight season), senior linebacker Marcus Jackson, senior defensive back John Roland, junior offensive lineman Giovanni Kennedy and junior defensive lineman Kaleb Brown.

All-OAC second-teams for Mount Union were junior wide receiver Nick Turner, senior wide receiver Tyrell Sanders, senior offensive lineman Jarrett Burress, senior offensive lineman Ben Lilly, junior quarterback Noah Beaudrie, senior defensive lineman Von Factor, junior defensive back Weston Arthur and senior special teams performer Darnell Williams.

Earning All-OAC monorable mention were senior cornerback Tony Cook and junior offensive lineman Mason Fortner .

Other OAC special awards went to John Carroll senior Matt Wrather, Ken Wable Award as the top offensive lineman for the second time; John Carroll graduate student Tyren Montgomery, Ed Sherman Award as the top receiver; Marietta senior Chance Knight, Paul Hoernemann Awards as the top linebacker; Marietta junior Harley Hopkins, Gene Slaughter Award as the top linebacker; Heidelberg junior Joseph Norris III, Lee Tressel Award as the top defensive back; Owen Schukert, first recipient of the Special Teams Award; and Marietta’s Reed Florence as Assistant Coach of the Year.
