United soccer into district

HANOVERTON — The United boys soccer team didn’t have to play a match to advance to the Division V district semifinals.

Cleveland Campus International informed the Golden Eagles they do not have enought players to field a team and will not be traveling to United for the sectional final on Wednesdasy.

United advances to the district semifinal against either South Range, Columbiana Station or Canton Central Catholic on Oct. 24.

Salem girls advance

SALEM — Three players scored goals as 18th-seeded Salem topped 22nd-seeded Struthers, 3-1, in a Division IV sectional match at Sebo Stadium Monday.

Maddy Andres scored the lone goal of the first half off an assist from Delaney Callahan to give the Quakers a 1-0.

In the second half, the Davidson-Chuck sisters combined — Reese scoring off an assist from Rylee — to extend Salem’s lead to 2-0.

Gabby Coletta sealed the victory with a third goal, assisted by Karlie Sampson.

Paige Menough had one save in goal thanks to stellar defensive play from Hailey Morgan, Delaney Callahan, Rylee Davidson-Chuck, Emilee Lewis, Emily Sinsley, Sarah Sinsley and Channing Toy.

Salem (6-10-2) will travel to seventh-seeded Oberlin Firelands for a district semifinal Tuesday. Fireland beat 33rd-seeded Marlington, 3-0, Monday.

West Branch girls move on

BELOIT — Tenth-seeded West Branch blanked 30th-seeded Ravenna, 8-0, in a Division IV sectional match Monday.

The West Branch girls improve to 10-2-4 and will meet the winner of Wednesday’s match between Canal Fulton Northwest and Tuslaw on Oct. 22.
