Beavers, Potters advance

CALCUTTA — It was short work for Beaver Local’s girls soccer team as it scored an 8-0 mercy rule win over Edison in a Div. IV sectional contest on Wednesday.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association’s rule is if any team is up by eight goals in the second half of a tournament game, the game is over.

Beaver Local star freshman Peyton Dunn had four goals to push her single-season school record total to 49. Ally Wright added two goals, while Alexis Lasure had a goal and assist, while Lainie Bock had a goal and two assists. Riley Springer and Tori Druschel had one save each.

No. 4 Beaver Local is 11-6-1 and will play No. 3 River View on Monday at a site to be determined.

Edison was the 14th seed.

East Liverpool 2,

Cambridge 1

EAST LIVERPOOL — East Liverpool’s girls soccer team advanced to the Div. IV district tournament with a 2-1 win over Cambridge on Wednesday at Patterson Field.

Annabel Fitch scored with 29:04 left in the first half and 30:23 left in the second half for the Potters.

The No. 10-seeded Potters (6-7-3) advance to meet No. 1 seed St. Clairsville at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at a site to be determined.

Cambridge was the 12th seed.

Bristol 2, Columbiana 0

COLUMBIANA — Bristol’s Daniel Sigler scored twice to help the Panthers down Columbiana’s boys soccer team 2-0 in a Div. V sectional contest.

No. 16 Bristol advances to meet the winner of Friday’s Campbell-Warren JFK game in the district semifinal.

No. 14 Columbiana ends the season at 10-8.

Rootstown 8,

Heartland 0

ROOTSTOWN — Rootstown scored an 8-0 mercy rule win over Heartland Christian in a Div. V sectional contest on Wednesday.

Heartland, the 44th seed, ends its season at 3-14-1. The score was 3-0 at the half.

Rootstown, the 12th seed, will play the winner of Saturday’s Badger-Berkshire game next Thursday at a site to be determined.

VOLLEYBALL

Waterloo 3,

East Palestine 1

ATWATER — East Palestine’s volleyball season came to an end with a 24-26, 25-9, 25-18, 26-24 loss to Waterloo in a Div. VI sectional contest on Wednesday.

East Palestine (8-16) was the 27th seed.

For the Bulldogs, Elle Berger had six kills and 17 digs, while Amara Wilson had five kills, 14 digs, six points, four aces and two blocks. Cami Kridler had eight assists, seven points and four aces. Marley Blythe had 16 digs, three kills and four points. Kennedy Andre had eight assists, seven points and an ace. Alyssa Dilling had 11 digs, three kills, five points and two aces.

Waterloo, the 25th seed, will be at No. 2 seed McDonald on Saturday.

Oak Glen tri-match

GLEN DALE, W.Va. — Oak Glen split its matches in a tri-match on Tuesday at John Marshall High School, falling to Philip Barbour and defeating John Marshall in varsity action.

Oak Glen fell to Philip Barbour in three sets, 25-22, 15-25, 14-25. McKenzi Martin led the Golden Bears with 15 kills and eight digs, while Averi Martin added 10 kills. Brooklyn Six contributed five kills, and Reecelyn Craig added three. Mikalyn Balch orchestrated the offense with 29 assists, and Addison Smith chipped in with seven digs.

In the second match, Oak Glen bounced back to defeat John Marshall in straight sets, 25-22, 25-22. Brooklyn Six paced the attack with 11 kills, while Averi Martin and McKenzi Martin had 10 and nine kills, respectively. Balch recorded 30 assists and 14 digs, while Smith added eight digs. Tia Vick contributed five digs, and Kendall Six had three digs.

Oak Glen is 21-4-3 and host Wheeling Central today.

In junior varsity action, Oak Glen lost to John Marshall 2-1. Zoey Caughey had seven kills and one block, while Caetlyn Six added five kills and one block. Kylie Robinson contributed four kills. Ellie Smith had 11 assists, and Darias Price added eight assists and four aces. Layla Skavenski rounded out the effort with nine digs.
