Beaver falls to top seed

ZANESVILLE –Beaver Local goalkeeper Hunter Warrick gave his team a chance in a Div. IV regional boys soccer semifinal against top-seeded River View on Wednesday at West Muskingum High School.

Early in the second half with the score tied at 1, the senior saved a penalty kick by the Black Bears’ Hayden Walters to keep the Beavers in the game.

However, Walters eventually broke through with a goal at the very start of overtime on an assist from Parker Andrews as the Black Bears advanced 2-1.

River View (18-1-2) outshot the second-seeded Beavers (17-1-1) 18-8 in the contest.

River View advances to meet Wheelersburg in the regional final at noon on Sunday at Joe Burrow Stadium in Athens.

Despite the defeat the Beavers did set the pace early as junior Brayden Price hit the back of the net with a strike with 26 minutes left in the first half. Price bounced on a loose ball in the box for the goal.

Although Beaver Local led early, it was River View dictating much of the action in the first half.

The Black Bears tied the game with a Parker Andrews’ strike with 9:35 left in the first half. Andrews also had a near miss a short time later.

River View outshot the Beavers 6-2 in the first half. The Black Bears also had four corner kicks to Beaver Local’s one in the first half.

There was brief stoppage in play in the first half as River View’s Carter Knicely picked up an injury.

In the second half, River View’s penalty kick was set up by a Beaver Local hand ball in the box. Warrick’s save prevented the Black Bears’ from going up, but River View kept the pressure on in the Beaver half of the field.

Beaver Local’s leading scorer Ethan Wood hit the side netting on a shot with 26 minutes left in the second half, but opportunities were slim otherwise.

Game notes

¯ Wheelersburg defeated Gallia Academy 3-1 on Thursday at Zane Trace.

Wheelersburg is ranked as the No. 2 team in the state in Div. IV by the MaxPreps ranking formula. Beaver Local was eighth and River View ninth.

¯ River View plays all of its home games on a natural grass surface. Beaver Local played one game on grass all season — a 4-2 win at United on Oct. 3.

¯ The winner of the Wheelersburg-River View game will get the winner of Poland-Beachwood in the state semifinal at a neutral site.

In the Poland-Mogadore Field game, a Bulldog player suffered a head injury in the first half and the player had to taken by ambulance to the hospital. The Bulldogs rallied to win 3-2 in over time.

Beachwood won on penalty kicks over Norwayne.
