Heartland’s Grim claims sectional crown
BOARDMAN — Heartland Christian freshman Cooper Grim rolled to the Division II sectional tennis championship on Saturday.
The top-seeded Grim won both matches that were moved indoors at the Avalon Racquet Club.
Grim beat Ursuline’s second-seeded Chris Simon, 6-3, 6-1, in the sectional final after topping Poland’s fourth-seeded Andrew Aey, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals. Grim dropped only five games in five matches at the sectional tournament.
Perry’s third-seeded Allen Morris topped Aey, 6-4, 6-3, in the third-place match.
The top four finishers advance to distrct play at Akron’s Springside Athletic Club on May 17-18.
In doubles action, Mooney’s top-seeded Rocco Turner and Dominic Graziano defeated Canfield’s second-seeded Drew Shapiro and Carson Arfaras, 6-4, 6-2. Geneva’s third-seeded Isaiah Rose and Myles Colgan beat Geneva’s Pooh Amphonkiat and Logan Willsey, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the third-place match.
Oak Glen ousted
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s girls tennis individual and doubles competitors did not advance out of the first round at the Class A/AA state tournament Friday.
In singles, Gabi Pasco dropped an 8-3 decision to top seed and eventual state runner-up Claire Strobl of Willamstown.
In doubles, the Golden Bears’ Pasco and Elle Monaco were beaten 8-1 by Williamstown’s Gabi Holl and Ashtyn McIntyre.
Williamstown’s Strobl and Akhia Miller were the Class A/AA doubles champions.
Williamstown is located across the Ohio River from Marietta.
