Clippers sweep EOAC titles

EAST PALESTINE — The Columbiana boys and girls both won the last race Saturday to grab the league titles from defending champion United.

The Columbiana boys took first and second in the long jump and high jump along with the 1600-meter run to capture the sixth Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference Track and Field Meet Saturday at Reid Stadium. The Clippers totaled 166 points. United, which had won the first five league meets, was second with 160.

The Columbiana girls placed two runners in the top five in the last six individual races and won the 1600-meter relay for 139 points, four ahead of United.

It is Columbiana’s first league titles in track since 2017, when the Clippers swept the Inter-Tri County League White Division titles.

Salem girls repeat

BELOIT — The Salem girls track and field team poured it on in Saturday’s downpour.

The Quakers won nine events on the way to their fourth straight team title at the Eastern Buckeye Conference Track and Field Meet at Heacock Stadium.

Salem totaled 151 points. Host West Branch was second with 109 and Minerva third with 102.

Marlington topped the boys teams with 184 points. Minerva was second with 98 and Salem third with 87.

MAC Double

DEKALB, Illinois — Kent State graduate student Trey Double placed at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday.

Double, a former Salem High School standout, finished fourth in the 1,500 meters (3:55.72) at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

He did not finish the 800 meters later in the day after posting the fourth-best time (1:53.07) in Friday’s preliminaries.

The Kent State men finished second in the team standings. Akron captured its 10th Mid-American Conference outdoor title with 189 points, followed by Kent State with 171.

Shivers wins

BEREA — Salem’s Anthony Shivers was an easy winner at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet at Finnie Stadium on Friday.

Shivers, a 2013 graduate Salem High School graduate who won two state discus titles, won the event with a toss of 181-feet-7 to top the 19-thrower field.

Youngstown State teammates Ryan Henry and Dominic Perry were first and second in the men’s shot put with toss of 57-feet-11 3/4 and 57-feet-11, respectively. Perry was a two-time state champion at Crestview High School.

Mount Union’s Jeff Joseph, a West Branch graduate, was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:17.43).

Mason’s school mark

BEREA — Mount Union junior Mary Mason broke a 30-year-old record at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet on Friday.

Mason, a former Marlington High School standout, finished third in the women’s 800 meters in 2:10.20, breaking the mark held for 30 years by Heather O’Shea. Mason finished third out of 45 runners.

Mason joined Kenadee Wayt, Madison Miles and Elizabeth Funkhouser on the third-place 1600 relay team (3:45.26). Wayt is Heather O’Shea’s daughter.
