Heartland’s best season keeps getting better
COLUMBIANA–The Heartland Christian girls basketball team keeps adding to its most wins ever.
The Lions shot their way past Lordstown, 62-21, Wednesday and are now at 11 wins on the season, four more than the previous school best.
“I mean it is just the girls playing their hearts out every game and nobody worrying about who is getting the points and stuff,” Heartland coach Scott Libb said. “They are about a team and that is one of the best things about this group.”
Heartland Christian improves to 11-8 on the season, while Lordstown falls to 0-19.
The Lions are now are just one win away from securing its first winning season in program history.
“That’s awesome,” Libb said. “Three years ago when I started helping with girls program, we had a little bit of a foundation built, but those girls are all a part of this also.”
“This is only second year with them, but I know that they have wanted this for so long,” senior Rylee Shadowens said. “It feels great to be with them and be able to help them experience this.”
A win on Friday against Valley Christian will secure the winning season.
“We just have to do what we were doing tonight,” Libb said. “Move the ball around against their defense.”
After a slow start the Lions moved the ball solidly around the Red Devils defense and attack the inside with Rachel and Sarah Reynolds, while Shadowens controlled the perimeter as she accounted for three out of the six three-pointers, including one at the 6:25 mark in the third quarter that gave the Lions a 33-point advantage.
“We were stagnant in the first quarter against their (Lordstown),” Libb said. “At halftime we made adjustments to where we started moving the ball and then all of a sudden we started getting wide open layups.”
Shadowens and Rachel Reynolds led the Lions with 14 points each. Sarah Reynolds added 10 points.
Lordstown coach Bobby Marino praised the Lions’ teamwork.
“(Heartland) has some good girls who do some great things,” Marino said. “The two big girls inside definitely enforce. We had trouble with them all night. They all worked as a team really well and they make sure that they get those two open regularly, so they can open up three-point shots. They are really good at inside and out basketball.”
Lordstown was led by Elizabeth Warrier with 16 points.
Lordstown will host Campbell Memorial today.
Heartland Christian will be at Valley Christian on Friday.
