WELLSVILLE — Robert “Moose” Ramsey resigned as the Wellsville High School football coach Tuesday to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Ramsey went 22-36 in six seasons as head coach for the Tigers.
He did not offer a comment when asked about his next stop.
He said he came to the decision over the weekend and met with his players on Tuesday to tell them he was moving on.
“I am grateful for Wellsville for giving me the opportunity to coach for six seasons,” Ramsey said. “I was very blessed with the players and staff I had to work with and learned a lot in my time here.”
Ramsey, a 1987 graduate of East Liverpool High School, was a finalist for the East Liverpool head coaching position.
Ramsey guided Wellsville to a 4-6 record this past fall and just missed playoff spot in Division VII, Region 25.
The Tigers were 3-4 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference and tied Lisbon and Columbiana for fourth place.
Wellsville started last season with 23 players, nine of them seniors. The Tigers haven’t had a winning season since 2014.
Ramsey came to Wellsville for his first head coaching position in 2017 after 10 seasons away from coaching. Ramsey previously served nine season at East Liverpool, two as a junior high assistant and seven as a varsity assistant, including defensive coordinator under head coach Bob Thayer.
Wellsville is accepting applications for head football coach through Jan. 23, although that deadline is expected to be extended.
Applications can be sent to Superintendent Richard Mr. Bereschik, 929 Center St., Wellsville, OH 43968.
