Salem 17, West Branch 10

BELOIT — The Salem baseball team left West Branch as winners. But it may be the Warriors who get credit for the victory.

Salem’s 17-10 nine-inning win Wednesday is under protest by West Branch coaches after Salem allegedly used an ineligible player.

West Branch coach Rick Mulinix said junior varsity coach Gary Martin did not go to the junior varsity game in Salem on Wednesday to attend his son’s senior night at West Branch.

When Salem brought in a relief pitcher to throw two-thirds of an inning, Martin realized it was the same pitcher who threw 47 pitches against West Branch in Tuesday’s junior varsity game.

Mulinix said West Branch will report the matter to the OHSAA today and umpires told him it is an automatic forfeit.

West Branch left the bases loaded to end the sixth and seventh innings as the score was tied 10-10 through regulation. Salem opened the flood gates with seven runs in the ninth ininng.

Brock Young socked three doubles with three RBIs for the Quakers. Carson Rhodes had three hits and four RBIs. Corey Riesen had four hits and three RBIs.

Boston Mulinix had a double and triple with three RBIs for the Warriors.

Salem will play at Carrollton today.

West Branch hosts Marlington on Friday and Mogadore Field at 11 a.m. Saturday.
