Clippers earn district nod

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana’s Riley McElwain and Seth Spooner teamed up to blank Jefferson Area 3-0 on Wednesday in a Div. III sectional final at Firestone Park.

McElwain went eight innings and struck out nine with two walks. He used 79 pitches. Spooner came on for the save and had one strikeout in one inning of work.

Devin Daugherty had a double, single and an RBI for the Clippers. Spooner added a hit and RBI.

Columbiana is 18-7 and will meet Springfield at 4:30 p.m. on Monday in a Div. III district semifinal at Waddell Park’s Wilder Field in Niles.

Springfield 9, Crestview 5

COLUMBIANA — Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Division champion Springfield defeated Crestview 9-5 on Wednesday in a Div. III sectional final.

The Tigers got balanced hitting through the lineup and made regular contact on Rebel starter Sam Campbell who lasted three and a third innings. Campbell gave up four runs — none earned — on 40 pitches. Carter Blakeman finished the game going three and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts and a walk.

A.J. Stallsmith led the Tigers with two hits including a double. Braden Butler had a hit and scored three times. Ethan Mannion had a hit and three RBIs. Parker Dobson had two hits.

Tiger starter Braden Butler pitched six and a third innings while striking out four and walking four on 101 pitches.

Sam Campbell and Carter Blakeman had two hits each for the Rebels. No Crestview player had an extra base hit.

Crestview ends its season at 14-6.

Springfield (16-5-1) will meet Columbiana at 4:30 p.m. on Monday in a Div. III district semifinal at Waddell Park’s Wilder Field in Niles.

GREENFORD — Northeast 8 champion South Range secured an easy 10-0 win over Pymatuning Valley in five innings on Wednesday in a Div. III sectional final.

Shane Lindstrom had three hits and an RBI for the Raiders. Dylan Dominguez added two hits and three RBIs. Aidan English had a hit and two RBIs.

Billy Skripac struck out 12 on the mound.

South Range (19-2) will meet Champion at 7 p.m. on Monday at Waddell Park’s Wilder Field in Niles.

Streetsboro 5, West Branch 4

BELOIT — Streetsboro scored two runs in the top of the seventh to upset West Branch 5-4 in a Div. II sectional final on Wednesday.

The Rockets outhit the Warriors 12-4.

All of West Branch’s runs came in the sixth inning.

West Branch falls to 16-10.

Nick Wilson had a double for the Warriors.

Streetsboro will meet Eastern Buckeye Conference champion Marlington at 2 p.m. on Monday at Louisville High School.

Marlington beat Canton South 8-1 to advance.

St. Thomas will travel to Mineral Ridge today for the sectional final.
