PORTSMOUTH — East Liverpool’s girls tennis doubles team of Gianna Davie and Sydney Cooper is heading back to the state tournament.

The seniors finished as runner-ups in the Div. II district tournament on Tuesday at Portsmouth High School.

Davie and Cooper fell to Logan Elm’s Keller Clouse and Erin Gaskin 6-2, 6-3 in the district doubles final. The top two singles and doubles finishers advanced to state in that tournament.

The pair bested Mollie Creech and Savanah Holtgrewe from Portsmouth Notre Dame in the first round, 6-1, 6-0. Then the Pottes beat Maria Nolan and Izzy Hamilton of Wheelersburg in the semifinal 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to qualifiy for state.

Potter coach Darelene Vantilburg thought the defending district champs played a little tired on the day and hopes for better results in the state tournament.

“They didn’t have a hard time with the Notre Dame team,” Vantilburg said. “The Wheelersburg team made them work and the Logan Elm team was really good at ball placement.”

Vantilburg said it was warm on Wednesday and the team did come the longest way at five hours, but said she didn’t believe that played any factor.

Cooper and Davie will play in the Div. II state tournament set for Oct. 22 and 23 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Last year, Cooper and Davie were eliminated in the first round of the state tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Destiny Winans and Abigail Franks of Canton South.

State tournament play will begin at 9 a.m. both days.

Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for adults and must be purchased at ohsaa.org.
