Suburban League rained out

BOARDMAN – The Suburban League Cross Country Championship was canceled due to a thunderstorm Wednesday and will not be rescheduled.

Rain started in Boardman at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday and the first thunder at Boardman High School was heard at 4:13 p.m. There were several sightings of lightning, including a large bolt at 4:38 p.m. The meet, which was scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m., was canceled just after 5 p.m. following a downpour.

The championship race has not been held since 2019. The entire Suburban League schedule was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gresko was a winner

ALLIANCE — Jim Gresko, 49, the leading rusher on Mount Union’s first national championship team, died Sept. 18 at the Windsor House at Liberty following a brief illness.

Gresko led McDonald High School to the Division V state championship game in 1989 and Mount Union to an NCAA Division III national championship in 1993.

In his final football season in 1993, he led the Purple Raiders by running for 1,517 yards and 16 touchdowns on 246 carries (6.2).

In the 1993 NCAA Division III national championship game against Rowan (N.J.), Gresko ran 24 times for 70 yards and a touchdown to go along with 10 catches for 69 yards and another score. His 2-yard touchown catch from Jim Ballard in the fourth quarter gave the Purple Raiders the lead for good in a 34-24 victory.

Gresko was a self- employed construction worker.
