Falcons are flying into Beaver Local

CALCUTTA — Beaver Local football has found a new opponent for Friday night.

On Wednesday, the Beavers (3-2) agreed to host Lutheran East (3-2) after having their contest with Oak Glen canceled due to a positive COVID-19 case.

Beaver Local coach Mike McKenzie said the Falcons were the only team “committed to playing us that we talked to.”

He added that only having a short time to prepare for the Falcons is a tough task.

“It’s a challenge putting in a game plan in two days,” he said. “Our staff usually spends most of the weekend breaking down film and making adjustments based on watching films of our opponents. We haven’t had that same amount of time to watch films. We have to be able to play our base and adjust from there on Friday night.”

Lutheran East is better known for basketball. The Falcons won the Division III state basketball title in March.

The Lutheran East football team is recovering after losing to Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, 56-8, Saturday. Ironically, NDCL will be playing at East Liverpool on Friday.

The Falcons are averaging 28 points per game this year and their defense has given up only 16 points a contest.

Lutheran East is currently ranked ninth in OHSAA Division V, Region 17. The Beavers are positioned at 11th in Division IV, Region 13.

The Falcons won three of their first four games before last week’s defeat. They are also 2-1 on the road this season.

The Beavers are hoping to extend their three-game winning streak, which has benefitted from a high-octane running game led by Joe Monte, Austin Cline and Blake Lucas.

Beaver Local’s defense also contained Edison’s offense for most of the second half last week and even picked off Edison quarterback Gage Cline twice.

When it comes to playing defense against the Falcons, McKenzie said the Beavers have to keep an eye on running back Rayshon Kennedy, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior who was a second-team All-Ohioan last year. He received a full college scholarship offer from the University of Akron before the season.

“We only had a few hours to watch film at this point,” McKenzie said. “No. 2 plays tailback and linebacker and is who they try to feed the ball to. He is probably their best player.”

Kickoff between Beaver Local and Lutheran East is at 7 p.m. Friday.
