EBC battle of the Warriors

COLUMBUS — South Range and West Branch, the area’s lone remaining unbeaten football teams, are also the only ones mentioned in the Associated Press Ohio high school poll released Monday.

South Range (6-0) remains second in Division V. The Raiders, who have scored at least 40 points in every game this season, are tied with Hubbard for the Northeast 8 lead, both at 3-0. Hubbard is ranked 11th in Division III.

The Raiders will play at Niles on Friday.

West Branch (6-0) climbs a spot to fourth in Division IV. The Warriors are averaging an area-high 50.7 points a game with junior quarterback Dru DeShields, who is averaging 320 yards of total offense a game.

DeShields has completed 103 of 138 passes (75 percent) for 1,516 yards and 18 touchdowns along with 53 rushes for 401 yards (7.6) and eight touchdowns.

West Branch will host Carrollton on Friday in a showdown of Eastern Buckeye Conference leaders.

Carrollton, under head coach Jim Tsilimos, has won five straight games during a 5-1 start. Carrollton is 2-1 in games decided by seven points or less.

Only two of West Branch’s first nine opponents have winning records — Carrollton and Canton South.

Also in Division IV, Youngstown Ursuline (4-1) is ranked eighth and Indian Valley (4-0) is ranked 12th.

Indian Valley, which beat Beaver Local 37-26 in the season opener, will host 6-0 Sugarcreek Garaway on Friday.

Springfield Local is ranked 11th in Division VI.

Springfield (5-1) –the state runner-up the last two seasons– has rolled off five straight wins after a season-opening 41-21 loss to South Range. The Tigers are tied with Western Reserve for the lead in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Tier.

Springfield, which gave coach Sean Guerriero his 100th career victory last week, will host Waterloo on Friday.

Joining South Range in the Division V state rankings are Garrettsville Garfield (6-0) in fifth and Ravenna Southeast (6-0) in 14th.

Garfield is unbeaten in the MVAC Gray Tier along with Hubbard. Garfield will play at Campbell Memorial on Friday before hosting Crestview on Sept. 8.

Southeast will be going for a seventh win at Minerva on Friday.
