Beavers pick off Wildcats
CALCUTTA — Before the 2021 football season began, Beaver Local wanted its secondary to make plays in the secondary. Fortunately, for the Beavers it did just that in the waning minutes of a 27-21 win versus Edison on Friday.
Joe Monte picked off Edison quarterback Gage Cline with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter to seal the deal for Beaver Local.
“It’s a huge momentum swing. I had to buckle down and help the team any way I could,” Monte said about his clutch interception.
Both teams are 3-2 on the season.
The Beavers also got an interception from linebacker Nate Sprouse earlier in the second half and the defense held the Wildcats to 217 yards of offense.
But, it wasn’t facing Edison’s offense, according to Beavers’ Dorian Jackson.
“We keyed on Cusick a lot. He’s their leading receiver and they moved him around and put him in different formations,” Jackson said. “They tried to get everybody the ball. I think their coaches did a great job of that and made it tough.”
Edison tied the game at 14-14 late in the first half as Mason Eisnaugle rumbled into the endzone from four yards out.
Beaver Local responded in the opening minutes of the third period as Austin Cline hit Jackson for a 28-yard touchdown, making it 21-14.
The Beavers are now riding the waves of a three-game winning streak.
Jackson said the keys to his team’s recent success has been to hit the ground running.
“Keep your head up and keep going to practice. Without hard work, we wouldn’t be where we are,” Jackson noted. “We’re just going to use that as momentum and keep going.”
The Beavers did overcome three turnovers in this contest. One of the errors was an Austin Cline fumble in the end zone, which gave Edison the rock at the 20-yard line.
Overall, the Beavers offense punished the Wildcats for 478 yards and Monte rushed for 110 yards and a score.
Beaver Local will host Oak Glen at 7 p.m. Thursday.
• During pregame, Beaver Local conducted its annual homecoming festivities with Kodi Kinsey crowned the homecoming queen.
