Salem plays No. 1 Canfield

CANTON — The Salem baseball team is back in the regionals for the first time since 1999.

The Quakers (26-3) will play top-ranked Canfield (21-0) in a Division II regional semifinal at 2 p.m. today at Joe Gilhousen Field at Canton GlenOak High School

Canfield beat Salem, 10-0, in the season opener.

The winner advances to play the No. 4 Chagrin Falls-Akron Hoban winner on Friday.

Tickets are $12 and are available at www.ohsaa.org/tickets.

United seeks tennis coach

HANOVERTON — United High School is looking for a girls tennis coach. If interested, contact athletic director D.J. Ogilvie at David.Ogilvie@United.k12.oh.us.

Changes at the state track meet

COLUMBUS — The 113th boys and 46th girls state track and field meet will be different than the others.

All three divisions will be held simultaneously on Friday and Saturday at different high schools in the Columbus area — Division III at Westerville North, Division II at Pickerington North and Division I at Hilliard Darby.

It will cost more to attend a state meet. Tickets are $15 per day and must be purchased online at www.ohsaa.org/tickets. Parking will be $5.

The last time the state meet was held in 2019, fans could see all three divisions at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium for $10 per day with free parking. Last year’s meet was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Field events will be held at 10 a.m. both days, followed by the running events at 2 p.m.

The running preliminaries on Friday include three heats in six lanes. The top two in each heat and the next two fastest times advance to Saturday’s state finals.

Valley High School All-Star Classic

NILES — The Valley High School All-Star Classic will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Eastwood Field. Select seniors from Trumbull and Mahoning Counties will face off. West Branch’s Tanner Egli, David Cunningham and Josh Meissner are scheduled to play for the Mahoning team.

Tickets are $5.

Oak Glen softball opens tournament play

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The unbeaten Oak Glen softball team opens tournament play today.

The top-seeded Golden Bears (23-0) will host fourth-seeded Fairmont Senior (10-15) at 5 p.m. today in West Virginia Class AA, Region 1, Section 1 tournament action.

Fairmont Senior advanced by sweeping fifth-seeded North Marion, 13-3 and 12-3, Tuesday.

Borchert on Hall of Fame ballot

ALLIANCE — Record-setting Mount Union quarterback Bill Borchert is on the 2021 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Borchert was a two-time All-American that played under center for the Purple Raiders from 1994-97. Mount Union went 50-3 over those four seasons, winning four Ohio Athletic Conference titles and NCAA Division III national championships in 1996 and 1997.

He won the 1997 Gagliardi Trophy, given to NCAA Division III’s top all-around player, the 1996 and 1997 OAC Mike Gregory Awards as the conference’s top offensive back and a three-time All-OAC First Team selection.

He still holds school career records as he was 946-of-1,447 passing for 14,482 yards with 189 touchdowns. He accounted for a record 15,308 yards of total offense and 200 TDs. As a senior in 1997, he threw a school-record 63 touchdown passes.

Borchert has already been inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Mount Union M-Club Hall of Fame in 2013.

The Parma native graduated from Mount Union in 1998 with a degree in business administration and marketing. He is a sales executive with IBM and lives with his wife Erin and daughters Lauren and Emily in Richfield.

The ballot includes 78 players and seven coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 99 players and 33 coaches (non-Division I) from the divisional ranks.

Salem Elks Soccer Shoot

SALEM — The Salem Elks Annual Soccer Shoot will be held on Sunday at the CenterPlex. Registration is at 12:30 p.m. and shoot starts at 1 p.m. Shoot is for those 15 and under. There will be five individual age groups.

Salem X-TRA Mile Club

SALEM — The Salem X-TRA Mile Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Sebo Stadium.

East Liverpool Salvation Army virtual run

EAST LIVERPOOL — The East Liverpool Salvation Army’s virtual 5K & 1-Mile Fun Walk will be held June 26 at Thompson Park, but can be completed at any place at any time.

Cost is $35, which includes a T-shirt and medal.
