Rovers rally by Eagles
ROOTSTOWN –Shelbie Krieger hit a fifth-inning home run to lift ninth-seeded Rootstown past 15th-seeded United, 7-5, in a Division III sectional opener Tuesday.
The Rovers improve to 14-6 on the season, including a 12-7 win at United last month. The Rovers advance to play at fourth-seeded Columbiana at 5 p.m. Thursday.
United led 5-4 in the third inning before Krieger held the Eagles scoreless over the last four innings.
Krieger and Natalie Hammerschmidt both homered and singled for the Rovers. Zoey Pastva added a triple.
Samantha Lippiatt and Joshlyn Irey each had two singles for the Eagles. Savannah Burton scored two runs.
Savannah Burton walked, Madison Boyle was hit by a pitch and a double steal scored United’s first run in the second inning. Taylor Cope followed with a deep fly to center field that was dropped, scoring Boyle to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The Rovers went up 3-2 in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Hammerschmidt’s solo home run.
United loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning on a Tori Firth single and walks to Colby Burton and Savannah Burton.
After a pair of strikeouts, the Rovers tried to pick the runner of first and the throw went into the outfield and the next throw got past the catcher, scoring two runs on the play. Savannah Burton scored on a wild pitch to put the Eagles ahead 5-4.
Rootstown tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the third.

Salem 6, Streetsboro 3
STREETSBORO –Rylie Troy struck out 15, including 12 in the first five innings, to highlight 22nd-seeded Salem’s 6-3 win over 20th-seeded Streetsboro in a Division II sectional opener Tuesday.
Troy and Hannah Kelm each had two hits and scored a run, while Chase Toy had an RBI double.
Leading 4-3, the Quakers added two insurance runs by Kelm and Jenna McClish in the top of the seventh inning. Dorthy Moore’s single drove in one of the runs.
Salem advances to play at second-seeded Canfield at 5 p.m. Thursday.

West Branch 11, Ravenna 0
BELOIT — West Branch senior Jordan Anderson pitched her third no-hitter of the season as fifth-seeded West Branch blanked 26th-seeded Ravenna, 11-0, in six innings of a Division II sectional opener Tuesday.
Anderson struck out 11 and did not allow a walk. She helped her cause by going 2-for-3 with two triples and a double and driving in three runs.
Skyler Greeneisen also drove in threr runs with a triple and a single. Sam Morris doubled and singled, Sydney Mercer tripled and Tori McKay doubled.
West Branch (19-6) advances to host eighth-seeded Perry at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Garfield 15, East Palestine 1
GARRETTSVILLE — East Palestine’s softball team suffered a 15-1 loss to Garfield in five innings on Tuesday in a Division III sectional contest.
Summer Bourne and Cat Sommers both hit home runs for Garfield.
Morgan Rutledge went 2-for-3 for East Palestine. Gabby Andre also had a hit and scored the Bulldogs’ run.
Garfield will travel to meet Champion on Thursday in the sectional final.
East Palestine (9-11) will host Maplewood in regular-season action Thursday.
