Potters reach district

DOVER — East Liverpool junior singles player Cole Dailey and the Potters’ doubles team of sophomore Preston Dawson and senior Norman Butler advanced to Division II district play.

Both Potter entries were the second seeds in the Division II East sectional tournament and won two matches Monday at Dover Park.

The top four qualifiers will return to Dover this morning and will play for seedings.

The top four singles players and top four doubles players advance to district play at Portsmouth on May 22.

Dailey earned 6-0, 6-0 wins over Steubenville senior Andrew Neely and Beaver Local junior Lukas Wain — the Beavers’ lone player at the sectional.

He will play St. Clairsville’s fourth-seeded Evan Holsetein today. The other sectional semifinal has West Holmes’ top-seeded Curtis Wagner taking on St. Clairsville’s third-seeded Alex Douglass.

Dawson and Butler beat Steubenville Catholic Central’s Johnny O’Karma and Matt Mitch, 6-2, 6-0, and Indian Creek’s Aiden Wright and Nathan Cosgrove, 6-0, 6-0.

The Potters will play Cambridge’s second doubles team of Brady Hannon and Blade Bachmann, which upset Berlin Hiland’s third-seeded Wyatt Freeman and Zach Mullet, 6-4, 6-2, to advance.

The other East Liverpool doubles team of freshmen Conor Ghrist and Liam Campbell fell to Indian Creek’s Kyle Laughery and Mason Yoho, 6-2, 6-2.

In singles action, Wain defeated Steubenville Catholic Central sophomore Michael Duff, 7-5, 7-5, and St. Clairsville junior Shane Jackson, 6-4, 6-2, before falling to Dailey.

East Liverpool freshman Ayden Wright and senior Jude Mercer dropped their opening singles matches in three seats.

Wright fell to Hiland junior Garrett Shoup, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and Mercer fell to Hiland sophomore Carson Habeger, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
