Perry tops Horizon

YOUNGSTOWN — Sophomore Dominic Perry and freshman Hunter Christopher helped the Youngstown State University men’s track team win the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend.

Perry, a two-time Division III state champion at Crestview High School, won the men’s shot put with a toss of 55-feet-0 1/4 on Saturday.

Youngstown State freshman Zach Gray from McDonald was second (53-1). Perry and Gray finished one-two in the shot put at the last Ohio high school state meet in 2019.

Perry also was seventh in the hammer throw (162-3 1/2).

Christopher, who was a state placer at Salem High School, had a pair of personal bests as he was second in the 5,000 meters (14:35.67) on Sunday and sixth in the 10,000 meters (30:59.44) on Friday.

YSU sophomore Luke Baun from South Range was 23rd out of 41 runners in the men’s 5,000 meters (15:229.24).

Action on Friday and Saturday was held at Farmers National Bank Field, while Sunday’s competition was moved indoors to the Watson and Tressel Training Site due to inclement weather.

The Youngstown State men totaled 234 points, followed by Milwaukee with 196 1/3.

The Youngstown State women captured their seventh consecutive league title with 234 1/2 points. Milwaukee was second with 150.

YSU freshman Teddi Kinsey from Beaver Local placed in three women’s events.

She was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (64.44 seconds) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (14.60) and sixth in the 1600-meter relay (4:00.88).

YSU senior Ashleigh Rowley from Western Reserve was third in the women’s 5,000 meters (17:13.50).

YSU sophomore Camryn Jarrett from United was ninth in the women’s javelin (103-3).

A pair of Minerva High School products also competed. YSU junior Mackenzie Scott was seventh in the 10,000 meters (36:57.63) and 18th in the 5,000 meters (18:15.25) and Northern Kentucky sophomore Nelle Yankovich was 12th in the 1,500 meters (4:52.72).
